Completely agree. It’s going to take long enough to negotiate rejoining without spending obscene amounts of dosh merely to entertain the jaded population with yet another round of meaningless ‘Brexit’ theatricals.

We don't even know how to run referendums in the UK. Completely amateurish, compared to other countries. We shouldn't run another one until we work out how to do it properly.

A second Brexit referendum is a truly stupid idea. Straight to rejoin. No fucking about. There’s no logical argument, economic or otherwise, for not rejoining. The British electorate has proven that they don’t have a clue and are easily duped by disinformation campaigns and foreign interference.

The Battle of Cable Street became the defining moment in the history of British antifascism. It also changed the law; Parliament passed the Public Order Act 1936, which included a ban on wearing political uniforms in public. We should remember, thank & salute every one of those early anti-fascists.

Ninety years ago today, Oswald Mosley tried to march his Blackshirts through the Jewish East End. He had thousands of uniformed fascists behind him and 6,000 police trying to clear the way but the people of the East End got there first.

“There are few more beautiful or striking scenes in England than are presented by the vicinity of this ancient Saxon fortress.” When Sir Walter Scott published Ivanhoe in 1819, he transformed Conisbrough Castle into “Coningsburgh”, an imagined ancient seat of Saxon kings. In reality, its great
The 12th-century stone keep and ruined curtain walls of Conisbrough Castle, a medieval fortress located in South Yorkshire. It was built around the 1170s or 1180s by Hamelin Plantagenet, the half-brother of King Henry II. ruins inspired Sir Walter Scott to feature the site as the home of Cedric the Saxon in his famous 1819 novel, Ivanhoe Image: sctkirk CC BY-SA 2.0

Scott had glimpsed the castle from a mail coach in 1811 and was captivated by its romantic appearance. In Ivanhoe, it becomes a meeting place between Saxons and Normans, whose reconciliation symbolises the creation of a shared English identity.

Yet Scott’s vision also reflects the racial thinking of his own age. He portrayed Saxons and Normans as distinct “races”, while the novel contains antisemitic stereotypes, particularly in its portrayal of Isaac of York. At the same time, characters such as Rebecca expose the persecution and prejudice faced by Jews. Modern scholarship therefore sees Ivanhoe as both challenging prejudice and reproducing some of the racial assumptions of the early nineteenth century.

Published in 1819, the year of the Peterloo Massacre, the novel’s theme of reconciliation gave its medieval setting a distinctly contemporary resonance: an imagined past used to explore identity, division and the possibility of unity.

Compare the EU to the reality of Brexit Britain — and be aware that the EU itself knows it can never be perfect, which is why it's the Commission's job to suggest reforms. 🇪🇺
