Three things that concern me, on a scale that I won’t divulge: 1. the thing where adults won’t watch or read things about “bad” people 2. All the first person genre fiction marketed as adult fiction. sorry. 3. The way that the people who we need to win don’t seem to want to win

Sorry but if antivaxxers were truly looking for people to just treat them kinder they wouldn’t have aligned themselves with every single hate movement that exists, and it’s intolerant to everybody else to act as if that’s not exactly who they are

Widow's Bay wasn't bad! Ok. Like a lot of good shows these days: strong cast, high production values, more interested in executing genre well with a fun & knowing twist than using genre as a portal into startling & moving depth. We've gone from the Golden Age of tv to the Fun Age.

“You just get allergic to it, because the truth is there’s been this terrible trend for decades now of so many people writing in this disgusting, sentimental way saying what’s happening way too directly. “I’m sad because we never really talked…” Who the fuck says that, you know?” -Kenneth Lonergan

Petty, sorry: This live-tweet of Pride & Prejudice has been shared into my feed and the opening two posts indicate a familiarity with the story details/characters that de-legitimize like 80 percent of the rest of the posts. Also. Imagine saying JA didn't understand the stakes of unmarried women.

If roughing up a girlfriend and locking her in a room was a virile, authentic a rejection of “smoothgroined” “HR lady” politics, but a rape is too far, then what’s at stake is not a principled rejection of violence against women but a cynical assessment of how much violence a man can get away with.

Saw Emma Smith on a podcast claiming that Hamlet is overrated. It is in fact impossible to overrate Hamlet. It’d be like saying oxygen is overrated.

Two* people are dead because of Republican senators like Ron Johnson, my miserably evil senator from Wisconsin, who have spewed lies and propaganda for political caché, while giving up their legislative power to rein in the anti-democratic and anti-human agenda of Trump et al. (Far more than two)

hindsight is 20/20 but maybe selecting university presidents on their willingness to debase themselves for private donor money is related to the current difficulties in defending academia from fascism

I just saw The Housemaid. It is perfect, high-gloss, beach-paperback Friday-night-movie trash of the kind we never get anymore. Everybody involved understood the assignment and aced it, and small heresy, this should have been Amanda Seyfried's Oscar campaign. Preposterously entertaining.

holy fucking paragraph batman prospect.org/2025/12/23/n...
Today, Marco Rubio is the Trump administration's most formidable liar.
When Pam Bondi or Pete Hegseth or Karoline Leavitt or Stephen Miller refers to an anti-genocide protester or a day laborer or a sandwich hurler or a fisherman clinging to the wreckage of a fishing boat that has just been struck by a Hellfire missile as a "terrorist," they come off as pathological. But Rubio's approval ratings are the highest in the Republican Party, even as he is the architect of what is arguably Trump's single most cynical policy: the scheme to appoint drug cartel bosses and their cronies atop the governments of every Latin American country, in the name of fighting drug cartels.

There is nothing in this films musical cues, in the casting, in how it ends that implies much else but a "Yeah he sucks, but you gotta admire his gall" attitude. I saw it a second time and it only confirmed it.

Diane Keaton’s ability to show you a character’s vulnerability was as striking as her gift for showing you what can lie beneath such sensitivity, including neediness at its rawest and most acutely exposed, our chief film critic Manohla Dargis writes.

Often Overlooked, Diane Keaton Was Essential to ‘The Godfather’ Saga
The star’s emotional transparency and expressive eyes helped us see the Corleones as both fascinating and repellent, just as her character did.

This woman wrote the most racist book (Her Father's Daughter) I ever unwittingly encountered. I had read her Girl of Limberlost and Freckles, which both have shades of eugenics in small doses—you know, the way it occasionally pops up in literature of the early 1900s. I wouldn't bet on this one.

The murder of Charlie Kirk, as well as the lifework of Charlie Kirk, deserve strong condemnation, and it is evidence of the broken morality and abandoned civic responsibility of the people around us that they will only address the former.
