In August I spoke with Rick Baker about his career after he received a lifetime achievement award at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland! This was a real full circle moment for me. One of the first interviews I ever did when I was green was with Baker at TCMFF in 2012.

Not to hijack this beautifully written #NAZA review by @812filmreviews.com, but this line made me go YES: "How many stories must be told from the wolf’s perspective before it stops hunting?" Basically the entire reason I started Mediaversity (and why the rating system is the way it is)

Tom Cruise is not a person who should be allowed to star in a satire. If he wants to star in your satire, it probably needs a heavy rewrite. I like Iñárritu, but this does not shock me either.

Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s DIGGER is BARDO blended with BIRDMAN, a satire about the didacticism of contemporary satires. It doesn’t work and Tom Cruise is adrift. “It’s instead a sneering premise awaiting a drop of humanism.” My review via @ebertvoices.bsky.social

The thing about studios dictating that everything is a spoiler is that months after the fact, the review doesn’t reflect the critic’s grappling with a film. It’s a reflection of a marketing strategy.

James Gray and I talked a lot about the role of the artist in relation to the effects of capitalism
To me, our economic system incentivizes cruelty to a degree that deeply upsets me. In any business negotiation, the party who cares less [about nonfinancial outcomes] holds all the leverage. That single dynamic demonstrates how brutal the system is. It chews people up and spits them out. I saw how harsh that system was on my parents. As an artist, my job isn’t to solve problems—a creative person can’t solve systemic issues, but we can point them out and transform the world’s pain into art. Corporate power has become so unassailable that people feel disconnected and alienated. When political systems and corporations fail, artists need to step into that void and speak out.
