My coverage of TWIN PEAKS continues with Season 3, Episode 13. I started the essay with Ed and Norma and their doomed romance. Lynch understood that for people to really feel love there had to be distance, and for these two, there's been twenty-five years of it. www.patreon.com/posts/132198...
a still image from the first season of Twin Peaks of Ed and Norma embracing one another. a still image from the third season of Twin Peaks of Ed blurry in the background staring at Norma, who is very far away The timing never seemed right for Ed and Norma, except for those moments when they felt they were encased in an evening that felt timeless. Lipton and McGill filmed one scene for Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, and it shows that Lynch had profound instincts for manipulating time, space and intimacy for the sake of romantic disorientation. We catch up to Ed and Norma after they’ve spent a full evening together. They’re at the very end of whatever paradise they’ve found within one another for a few hours, and they don’t want to admit that the sun is catching up to their privacy. They’ve pulled doves out of the moon and released them into the night. Norma fiddles with the radio in Big Ed’s truck looking for a song to punctuate the evening, and while resting in his arms she settles on the sombre, beautiful chords of Angelo Badalamenti beaming in from some other place. Ed tells her it’s beautiful, and Norma says, with alcohol swimming around in her body, that it’s “far away...like us.”. They want to lay there forever, entombed in each other’s warmth, with the spectating stars reassuring them that the light hasn’t come just yet.

Funniest detail to me re: Thom Yorke's weird relationship to Israel is that it's the first place Creep really took off so Israel kinda launched Radiohead's career. Israeli music fans could not get enough of a song that asks "what the hell am I doing here" and answers with "I don't belong here."

i dunno, in a year where two of the director nominees are Justine Triet and Jonathan Glazer, it feels weird being annoyed that Greta Gerwig didn't get what would have been a very deserving nomination it's like back when the Academy would snub Spielberg for like Fellini... we gonna be mad?

"Why wasn't the film this?" is a really common criticism of, like, every movie and always has been, but I encourage you to look past it to figure out what the movie is doing and engage with that. You don't have to like it! You just can't assume you've defeated the film in intellectual combat.

As a non-fan of the first three seasons of TRUE DETECTIVE, I couldn't get enough of the new season, subtitled NIGHT COUNTRY. It's no shock that Jodie Foster is compulsively watchable; what a wonderful surprise that newcomer Kali Reis is just as magnetic. www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

The Hays Code’s whitewashed version of America is under recognized as a source of our historical amnesia. Ridicule of religion and the law was forbidden. So was depiction of homosexuality, interracial marriage, drug use, and abortion. The innocent past people remember was censored movies.
