I try not to start discourse but I have seen some frustrating trends across many fandoms, so: One of the main tenets of old fandom is ship and let ship. It's okay to not like ships, or to be squicked by them. It is on YOU to mute, block, and scroll past. It's not cool to be shitty on those posts.

Trying to get back to posting more poetry on here. Gazan poet Nasser Rabah:

screenshot of text:

"December 30, 2023
And a day goes by, and tanks, and the sky a festival of kids flying kites, and blood flowed behind a panting car.
And a day goes by, and the planes, and the tent of the displaced makes a bet with time: winter is late.
And a day goes by, and the snipers, and the market itself has no salt: so I said:
No worries, the merchants have plenty of sadness.
And a day goes by, and artillery, but my neighbor's funeral passes along
slowly, why rush at a time like this!
And a day goes by, and the newscasts, and when evening came, it was a bit joyous to find us all there with none missing, except the house.
(Translated, from the Arabic, by Emna Zghal, Khaled al-Hilli, and Ammiel Alcalay for the Brooklyn Translation Collective.)"

An underrated fandom experience is having a friend you can privately complain about your least favorite ships or headcanons with so you can have your petty bitch time without ever insulting or offending anyone in the fandom, and I think more people need to learn to do this

imo the multishipping ethos is not about being obligated to like more than one ship yourself but just being cool about entertaining multiple possibilities. it’s about not seeing different ships as inherently being in competition with each other.

Fanart for Bronwyn and Theo from The Rings of Power. Bronwyn is wearingher usual blue dress, her brown hair held back by an equally blue headband. She is embracing her son, who sits on her lap and embraces her back. Both have their eyes closed. In the background pink carnations and a yellow circle framing Bronwyn's head.

TROP fic: ‘ocean’s child and then his queen’, Galadriel/Tar-Míriel, 2500 words, M archiveofourown.org/works/64369546

Close-up of a painting: John William Waterhouse’s Cleopatra, showing her face and upper arm

Screenshot of text: “Galadriel shifts her weight back onto her heels where she stands, feeling the solidity of the flagstones beneath the diamond-patterned carpet. Duty had been enough to live for, once; it had moved her body as song moves a dancer, guiding her sword-arm and steadying her eye.
Now it sits uncomfortably upon her and she can no longer tell whether she resents it or it resents her. "There are greater duties than the whims of your petty little lords."
"There are," Míriel says. "And Númenor has not forgotten, and I have not forgotten. You may see nothing more in us than quarrelling proud mortals who have lost our way, Galadriel, but trust that there is more in this island's heart than that. I serve no petty little lords. I serve Númenor." “

I genuinely wish people in fandom could casually dislike something. But no, you have to be all: “This person likes something I don’t, therefore, they are a bad/dangerous person.” You don’t have to justify why you dislike something, you can simply dislike it, avoid it, and move on.

In Tolkien's early drafts, Númenor is an industrialized maritime empire with steampunk warships. That's why I love Ted Nasmith's Temple of Melkor in a late-19th-century Armenelos - it just *feels* right. Note too the similarity with William Logsdail's 1887 painting of St. Paul's Cathedral in London.

The Temple of Melkor, by Ted Nasmith. A vast structure with stone walls and a burnished dome rises above the Númenórean capital of Armenelos. Contrary to most portrayals, Armenelos here looks like London in the late 19th or early 20th century, which is appropriate given Númenor's imperial dominance during this period. Smoke rises from the apex of the Temple; a cart wheels the dead branches of the White Tree Nimloth to be burned upon Sauron's altar. The sky is a threatening yellow-orange with dark clouds massing on the horizon.

"St. Paul's and Ludgate Hill" (1887 or thereabouts) by William Logsdail depicts ahe stately dome of St. Paul's Cathedral in London rising above a bustling Victorian street. Steam and smoke rise in clouds from the teeming crowds and steam-engines below, contributing to the smog in a bleary English sky.
