Just when you couldnt be any prouder to be British here's Joseph Banks describing Xmas 1768 on Captain Cook's Endeavour "all hands get abominably drunk so that at night there was scarce a sober man in the ship, wind thank god very moderate or the lord knows what would have become of us"

In 1659, the the Puritans in Massachusetts enacted a law that declared that Christmas was sacrilege and exchanging of gifts, greetings, and wearing fine clothing on that day was Satanic. Anyone caught celebrating was fined 5 shillings. (About 5 days wages.) The "War on Christmas" was an inside job.

"Okay, get some snaps of that Mangione character, but you better not pull any bullshit where he looks like the subject in a 16th century painting called 'Christ taken at the Garden of Gethsemane'." "Okay, now don't be mad but..."
Luigi Mangione in orange jumpsuit in the center of the frame, flanked by law enforcement officers, his hands are clasped and bound in front of him he looks off to the side pensively, seriously does this guy just not photograph poorly at all?

people say “you need to start living in the real world” but they forget that the real world includes lupines and lightning bugs and ginger beer and starlight and sea coasts and Renoir paintings and Rachmaninoff’s piano concertos and fog banks and foxes playing in snow.

U.S. zoos sent millions of dollars to China to help protect wild pandas. But the Chinese government instead spent the money on apartment buildings, roads, computers, museums and other expenses, a New York Times investigation found.

Hercule Poirot had it exactly right: stay warm, ride trains, keep a mug of hot cocoa on the night stand and pick the sort of career where people regularly invite you to visit their lavish country estates.
