I do wonder how much less effective this trans athlete moral panic would be if families didn’t earnestly believe that an athletic scholarship was the best way to avoid overwhelming debt. Affordability crises open the door for bigotry and prejudice to become more politically powerful forces.

Kathleen Norris’s book “The Cloister Walk” has a phenomenal essay on Maria Goretti and another on the Virgin Martyrs where she talks to nuns who grew up in the 50s when all those dead girl saints were a huge part of Catholic culture in the US and how that fucks you up on a molecular level

Set aside the awful politics. My main dramatic issue with The Madison is that the central conflict of “Country Good/City Bad“ is way less interesting than something like “I miss my husband and want to be close to him in spirit/I love my old life in the city.” There’s no actual tension for Stacy.
