I'm almost there it's so pretty!! 😭 this is the first time I've made extensive use of complex numbers in shader code, which has been fun! it's an analytic 2D lighting system through piecewise conformal maps representing angular light/"sky" exposure, which means you get fully analytic penumbras!

Why do video games cost so much to make these days? A recent NYT article pinned bloated budgets on the graphical arms race, but that's only a small part of the equation. The real problem? Rampant mismanagement. This week's column is a spicy one: www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...

Seeing a looooot of takes and: - if you can move on from Unity you should. Just cus they've proven themselves iffy and closed source limits your options. - Unreal is fine if you like it. It has source. Worst case you branch off. - Don't bare metal your own tech. Start with Godot. Saves ya time.

procgen buildings using a simple box mesh, warped by noise in vertex shader for shape variation on xz plane and to create some instances of sloped and tipped skyscrapers. texturing is done procedurally in the fragment shader.
Lighting is a mix of height, and noise factors to create a volumetric effect of lightnormal buffer view of the geometry in the scene2 different input mesh objects with different scale range factors to create a more complex scene.
box for tall buildings, donut shape for more noise and structure complexity closer to the 'ground'normal buffer view of the scene using 2 different mesh particle types.
