You should never have to deal with this harassment in the first place. Yet here you are being treated like a problem in need of solving because of it, rather than a person in need of help and protection. Gross. You certainly have room to complain, and I'm so sorry that you're going through this.

This is one of the objections I have when people talk about how useful LLMs can be for literature searches or for any kind of search, really. Even beyond the biases that inevitably (and, in some cases, intentionally) show up, part of a good literature search is seeing information *in context.*

Thanks for sharing! I hope the physical copy method works out for you. I've done that with shorter documents like resumes before and it's usually resulted in productive class periods.

Would you mind saying a little more about the specific issues that GenAI is causing with this? I also like to use example assignments in class, so curious if I should re-evaluate as I'm planning for fall.

A letter from the mother of Alex Pretti, six months after he was murdered by ICE.
suzpretti

Today marks the six-month anniversary of Alex's murder. No one has been held accountable, no apologies, not a single phone call from any governmental official, hospital personnel, or the mpls police dept. Six-months of pain, a roller-coaster of trauma over and over. Every time another a death, another mention, a picture, a tribute, a sorrow so deep. I wonder how to move forward. Will I ever get over this loss and this pain?
Will I ever be able to enjoy life again? How does one live knowing that I have no power to change what has happened?

And yet the outreach not only from Minnesota, but from around the world has been nothing less than spectacular. Every card, every gift, every heartfelt letter has been read, touched, held, and cherished by us all. The kindness you've all shown us is beyond words. Please never forget Alex and what he believed in ~ equality and peace for all. I will remember the things that made you, you. It will never take your memory. As long as I'm here, you will never be forgotten.

For all you asking what you can do. Continue this fight. Never give up your right to speak out, protect your neighbor, your community and don't forget to spend time with those you love...

The upside is they get our registration/membership money, with none of it going to Cs as a thereafter-dissolved organization for which the parent organization keeps the financial assets (in theory).

We might also be better equipped to understand why the organization couldn't just use some of its $45 million in stock investments to help rightsize that fiscal sustainability

The Disability Studies Standing Group of Cs also put out a statement
Statement reading: The Disability Studies Standing Group (DSSG) of the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) joins our colleagues across the field in expressing our deep concern regarding NCTE leadership’s reported plans to dissolve CCCC and integrate its work into NCTE’s College Section. While the exact status and future of CCCC remain unclear, we are alarmed by the lack of transparency surrounding this decision-making process and by the absence of meaningful communication and consultation with CCCC officers, Committees and Committee chairs, Standing Groups, Task forces, and the broader CCCC membership.

For DSSG in particular, CCCC has provided an essential scholarly home for researchers, teachers, and activists working at the intersections of critical disability studies, disability rhetoric, and composition studies. Through CCCC’s support of Standing Groups, DSSG has developed and sustained mentoring relationships, maintained shared resources, coordinated disability-focused panels and workshops, advocated for access, and built a community for scholars whose work has historically been marginalized within academic institutions.

The proposal to dissolve CCCC’s - especially without the communication and collaboration necessary to safeguard and sustain the organization’s long history of knowledge- and resource-building - threatens the relationships and intellectual networks cultivated through DSSG’s operations. For early-career scholars and graduate students, the community built through DSSG and other CCCC’s standing groups provides an introduction to the field and supportive mentorship. We are deeply saddened by the thought that future generations of rhetoric and composition scholars and students will not be able to benefit from all that CCCC offers. CCCC plays a critical role in pedagogical knowledge production in composition and writing studies and beyond, and the loss of disability and accessibility position statements written by composition…

Adding on to point two here, this makes us vulnerable not just to state legislatures but to folks within institutions on curricular and other committees who don't have much familiarity with our discipline. Cs provides institutional legitimacy to point those people to and to rely on in proposals.

“Use AI to brainstorm but not to write.” “Use AI to help you outline but not to write.” These are commonly proposed as “ethical” ways for undergrad students to use AI, but I’m sorry, brainstorming & outlining are just as integral to writing as the actual construction of sentences.
