It does not feel coincidental that this is happening the same week as the Conference on College Composition and Communication (colloquially known as the C's or CCCC) is effectively being shuttered.

Imagine the conversation we could have about this travesty if NCTE didn’t require Cs officers and executive committee members to sign confidentiality agreements. Folks should also ask NCTE about how and whether their lucrative grant/partnership with Google was part of what Cs “culture” threatened.

The Cs was a place where precarious academic workers could dream of a better higher ed, as well as make it. Adjuncts and community college faculty were especially welcomed rather than just being stigmatized for where/how they taught. I loved hearing people’s 4Cs report backs!

College writing instruction is one of the places where academic labor exploitation is very high, and at the same time these same academic workers are at the front lines of the literacy crisis and are also the most committed to a truly inclusive university.

I think (??) Tressie McMillan Cottom used the phrase "beneath analysis" for some of the bs happening right now in the AI space. And that's how I feel about data center discourse these days. It's cartoonishly evil and extractive -- and it's like what more can be said?

I find it very embarrassing for our field that we've been having to repeat this about "AI" and writing instruction since I was one-year old (from an article by Fred Kemp in a 1987 issue of Writing Center Journal)
You may marvel, and many do, that computers can discover and describe in minute detail these characteristics of a student's paper, but I have a different reaction. Taking my cue from Artificial Intelligence research, Iook for truths about human discourse from what the computer can't do. The fact that a computer can perform the above analyses in ready fashion while being completely locked out of the content of a paper suggests that computer editing, while no doubt useful commercially and in discourse analysis, is not very useful pedagogically. Style-checkers promote a band-aid approach to writing instruction and direct time and attention away from the larger issue: the quality of the student's ideas and the relationship between those ideas and the form of expression she employs."

Really grateful for this article, but also unsettled with the Jacobin piece referenced. It's clear (to me) that the author hasn't spoken w/ communities who are organizing in astounding ways to slow, stop, or question the buildout of data centers. This is a profound coalitional movement — +

Looking forward to talking with folks at UMD this week! My talk is "Accelerate or Die? Digital Damage After AI Acceleration"
Flier for zoom event. Text reads:
Accelerate or Die? Digital Damage after AI Acceleration
The motto “accelerate or die” encapsulates an ideology lurking behind the rapid buildout of AI data centers across the planet. In this talk, after tracing Big Tech’s swift turn from so-called sustainable development to fossil-fueled acceleration, Dustin Edwards will insist that this moment of AI acceleration is not a foregone conclusion. In contrast to the techno-optimist ideologies that have fueled the recent AI data center boom, many frontline communities opposing data centers insist on a different vision for our collective futures—one rooted in place, attuned to uneven vulnerabilities, and dedicated to slower and more transparent processes of democratic decision making.

The fight for the living world is upon us... back to writing!! 😰
Four paragraphs of dark blue text on a bright kelly green background. A squiggly line touches the left and right edges near the bottom of the image.

Text reads:

But, Klein and Taylor reveal, the new supremacist survivalists are far from impregnable.

They have no vision of a shared future. All they offer are remixes of a bygone past: the nihilistic, sadistic pleasures of domination.

If we're to meet this critical moment and defend what's left of democracy before it's smashed up beyond repair, we must break the doom loop, and find a new way of living together, rooted in our existence on this earth, in the here and now.

A story not of end times - but of better times. This book shows us how.
