I truly, deeply, sincerely do think the guy flipping burgers at McDonalds should be able to afford rent, bills, and groceries with his paycheck alone. That's kind of the whole point of having a job and I can't believe this is considered a radical position.🤷🏽‍♀️

When I tell you this is one of the most riveting, concise and accurate depictions of the catastrophically defective thought processes behind Effective Altruism and the larger Broligarch Epistemic Universe... Run, don't walk, to read the whole thing (link below), which concludes thus:

Literary fiction is coming. It is going to revolutionize the economy. We know that China has already got a start on literary fiction. We can’t afford to be left out of the literary fiction economy. Think of your kids. They might already be engaging with literary fiction.

'Safety first' when sacking Rome.
The same young lady with goth makeup, a black Victorian-style dress, and dark hair: the classic 'goth look'. The original image is labeled "goth", while another one has been composited on with a high-vis yellow work vest like those used on construction sites, and below it it says "Visigoth".

Stolen from the Internet.

I ended up having more extended thoughts on Dolly Parton over on Facebook and I thought I would share them here as well.
When I was much younger, I knew her mostly as a caricature and the object of jokes, because young men are kind of stupid that way and I was no exception, and because she willingly played along with the joke, in part because she knew it would happen anyway, and this way she got to shape some of how that would play out for her, and use it for her own ends. It took me a while to realize how canny that was.

When I got older, I learned that underneath the caricature was a formidable songwriting and business mind. I had an inkling of what a rare combination that was in any person, but how even more rare it was for someone who was who she was, in the field and environment she worked in. Hidden in all those sparkles was a spine of steel.

When I got older than that I learned that in addition to a brilliant mind was a heart of kindness, which directed so much of the good fortune she amassed to herself right back out the door through philanthropic work, helping those in her communities, state and country, and which allowed to see the worth and dignity in those whom so many others treated (and still do treat) with contempt.

She was always all the things she was. What changed was my ability to see and understand who she was. I'm glad I was eventually smart enough to see it all.

NEW: I wrote for MSNBC about how Madison Square Garden turning off their facial recognition cameras for Taylor Swift is a perfect encapsulation of our dystopian present: where the wealthy can use surveillance to consolidate power, and the rest of us live in a privately owned panopticon.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce got to buy MSG's privacy. Her fans aren't so lucky.
Reports that Madison Square Garden temporarily shut off its facial recognition system for Swift’s wedding expose a glaring problem with how the elite wield and control mass surveillance.

The reason Zohran scares the shit out of them so much is that they think this sort of technocrat FDR liberalism/market socialism will *work* and be popular, not that it will fail and be unpopular. They're afraid that he will be a good mayor not a bad mayor.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, a West Wing style hyper-saturated but not melodramatic episodic hopecore drama series about a progressive political operation that was just the Mamdani administration with the serial numbers filed off would have endless viewership numbers.
Meme made of screenshots from the Lulu Garcia Navarro interviewing Zohran Mamdani

[Top: picture of mamdani, with text reading] *New York Times interviewing Zohran Mamdani*
[Middle: picture of Navarro and Mamdani with text reading] *Mamdani has a cough attack mid-interview* "I'm so sorry... It's just a bad cough."
[Navarro:] "Have you had it checked out?"
[Mamdani:] *recovering, sipping glass of water* "I have."
[Bottom: *Mamdani,] fighting for his life, [trying not to cough and choke,] staring directly at the camera, still smiling*
"That's why I believe in Medicare for all. Everyone can check it out."
