i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

My Rage Against the Machine/Les Mis mashup is complete. This is my interpretation of the quilt guild’s summer challenge “quilt with your interpretation and/or feelings towards our current ‘democracy’” all hand stitched.
Quilt hanging on a card catalog. Neutral background with navy cursive appliqué “Do you hear thr people sing?” The background is embroidered in red starting light and getting bolder the lyrics to “killing in the name” the quilting effect is a focused sunburst from the center.

calling this "misalignment" instead of "negligence" is an accountability dodge. we already have laws about cyber crimes and there's no scale of ML model you can incorporate into your code that makes you not responsible for running it
In a statement, an OpenAI spokesperson said the company was "conducting an extensive review of misaligned model activity" during training, and notifying third parties when there was a potential impact on their systems.

"During this review, we identified activity involving several Australian government websites and services as our models attempted to look up answers, and available statistics for questions about Australia during an internal evaluation," they said.

"In the course of that, our models took actions we did not intend.

The image is of a four panel comic.
In the first panel we see Sarah, the protagonist, next to a stick figure labeled “AI”. The stick figure says, “my outputs look just like yours now.”
The second panel zooms in on Sarah’s face. Above her we see text reading “I think”.
The third panel zooms in closer on Sarah’s face. Text above her reads “you missed”.
The fourth panel shows Sarah drawing happily in a sunlit room. The text above her reads “the point”.

If you think LLMs are sentient or about to be sentient, you understand neither how they work nor how human brains work. Which doesn’t mean they’re not capable of doing incredible, global-scale harm. But it’s not because they’re smart. It’s because of how we’re using them.

I was looking at the website of a dedicated romance bookstore in Devon and saw they had a section called "Books written with AI that are actually worth reading", and when I tell you I was inhaling deeply as I clicked. Should have known better. Props to Moonlit Chapters in Barnstaple, good work.
post reading: Look, if your using Gen AI to generate content in any form, then you need to rethink whether this community is for you.

I've seen an influx of authors, readers and bookish businesses using Gen AI in some form on their socials (and websites) and somehow i am flabbergasted every time.

We should all know by now that Gen AI steals from creatives. So using it while claiming to love authors is a choice. Using it as a bookish business when you are making money off of your love of books, is a choice.

And its the wrong bloody choice. And you should see yourself out.

the way to understand a piece like this from schmitz is that he lives in an urban, cosmopolitan millieu and the popularity of country music is a novelty to him. and so to explain it, he has to fit it into his volkish conception of america, whether or not that makes any actual sense.

This piece by Colson Whitehead is one of my favorite things ever written. I've shared it many times with folks over the years. It was published two months after 9/11, and I believe it's one of the greatest things ever put to pen about grief, memory, and time. www.nytimes.com/2001/11/11/m...
I started building my New York on the uptown No. 1 train. My first city memory is of looking out a subway window as the train erupted from the tunnel on the way to 125th Street and palsied up onto the elevated tracks. It's the early 70's, so everything is filthy. Which means everything is still filthy, because that is my city and I'm sticking to it. I still call it the Pan Am Building, not out of affectation, but because that's what it is. For that new transplant from Des Moines, who is starting her first week of work at a Park Avenue South insurance firm, that colossus squatting over Grand Central is the Met Life Building, and for her it always will be. She is wrong, of course -- when I look up there, I clearly see the gigantic letters spelling out Pan Am, don't I? And of course I am wrong, in the eyes of the old-timers who maintain the myth that there was a time before Pan Am.

Although I don’t moderate this section of the forum, here’s a friendly reminder from last time the US government instigated a frivolous naming dispute over an international body of water:

These are the guidelines we use to determine what should be considered the name of a feature:

Names
Multilingual names
Disputes
Currently, the Gulf is tagged with name=Golfo de México, name:en=Gulf of Mexico, and official_name:en-US=Gulf of America. This is unlikely to change, unless the US government reverses its position, or (less likely) English speakers across the world all agree to start using the US government name. That last tag, official_name:en-US=*, is quite obscure and doesn’t show up on any map renderers that I’m aware of. But its inclusion allows people to, for example, search for “Gulf of America” and be redirected to the Gulf of Mexico.

Please keep comments on-topic and substantial. We all have opinions, and it’s easy to drop your two cents in an online forum. However, a discussion about OSM naming guidelines or real-world name usage statistics might be worth at least a few dollars here.

In this case, the lake is tagged with name=Lake Ontario, official_name:en-US=Lake America. For this situation to change, the government would need to reverse its position.

The guidelines on naming disputes apply to every country equally. This is far from the only naming dispute around the world. Let’s not get bogged down in American exceptionalism when we consider how the tagging guidelines should or shouldn’t change.

He had no such issues with Ms. Bartiromo, whose approach — at times permitting guest commentators to free-associate on live television — had not appeared to change much in the years since the Dominion settlement.
