Some good aims people think national service does but would be much better with other tools: Bring diverse groups into common project Reconnecting communities with public good through public means Addressing imbalance of military service sacrifice Support public projects Understand govt role

Oh my god the whole game is opposing fascism and pushing hard on political leaders who are sitting idly. A boring centrist with milktoast views could landslide a primary if she was loudly opposing fascism and telling party leaders to stand the hell up. This is not rocket science!

I tend to think that what makes parties are voters and what makes party leaders is passion, ability to shape context and outcomes, and willingness to listen with power.

Excellent thread. Another reason “apolitical military” frustrates is how it exempts military institutions from relationships, ie, from understanding non-military impacts of military actions or from seeking the partnerships and early advice to understand those. Or vice versa.

Couple notes: (1) it has long bothered me that we tend to talk around civilian control as though it is self executing on the civilian side (2) expectations of civilian control seem to have a LOT of assumptions around principle and competence for said civilians
