Everything's grand, I can't remember why we wanted this money in the first place...

... great for public literacy and education, and as a space for community events and classes. I think the council should be making this investment in the people of Cherry Orchard.

Cherry Orchard is a community that will be transformed over the next few years, with thousands of new homes and a major revamp of Cherry Orchard Park. A public library would be a fantastic addition to the area...

The government is throwing money at fossil fuels, and spending a pittance on breaking our dependency on fossil fuels. Storing up problems for the future

That's it! 3 reviews, one extension of an existing relief, one (welcome) increase in an allowance. This tinkering around the edges does not show a Government serious about transitioning away from fossil fuels and making renewable energy easily available for all households across the country.

Having written off 4 years of carbon tax revenue (and no indication yet how that hole will be filled) the Tanaiste spends a section of his speech talking about how important energy transition is to his Government. But what the the measures he is actually announcing?

Very local update - this bus stop blocks the sightline of cars pulling out onto Walkinstown Avenue. I asked before to have it moved, it got lost in the bureaucracy. I've asked again, maybe this time will be more successful?

[A parody of MR ROGERS’ NEIGHBOURHOOD, in which the kindly Mr Rogers takes us to see local things in his town.]

[title]
MR ROGERS’ NEIGHBOURHOOD

MR ROGERS:

Hi there

2
Today, I’d like to take you to visit some of my neighbours…

[He puts his coat on to leave his house]

3
At a wonderful local event,

[We see the cute toy-town diorama of his village famous from the TV show. The camera pulls out…]

4
The Data Center protest.

[The camera has pulled out further and now we see a huge DATA CENTER at the edge of town].

5
MR ROGERS [joining a crowd protesting outside the Data Center]:

The Data Center is an enormous, windowless, endlessly humming building outside of our town

6
…Which has tripled energy prices, drank all the water, and created four jobs.

7
[to camera, as if kindly explaining to the viewing children]:

Four jobs! Golly!

8
LADY PROTESTOR [probably NAOMI KLEIN, holding a sign]:

In a way, the Data Center is kind of a vivid metaphor for a future we feel locked out of!

9
MR ROGERS [to camera again]:

A metaphor.

10
That’s something that lets us clarify our feelings about something else.

11
LADY PROTESTOR:
How do you feel, Mr Rogers?

MR ROGERS:
I feel like bringing down the government!

12
MR ROGERS [now holding a sign and protesting]:

It’s good to have neighbors.

[ends]

The ‘Zionism is Racism’ motion has passed at Green Party conference. While there are many parts of the motion I can agree with, there are some that I could not, so I did not vote for it. Here is a joint statement from the Green Party leadership team and all of us Green MPs:
Joint statement:

As Greens, we will always uphold universal human rights.
We will never tolerate any form of discrimination or harassment.
We will continue to stand in opposition to genocide, ethnic cleansing, apartheid and the illegal occupation.
We will continue to call out the heinous crimes of the Netanyahu government.
And we will continue to work to ensure that the Green Party is an anti-racist party in every way.
We know there is no conflict between supporting the rights of Palestinians and the rights of Jewish people.

This is written to fly under the radar, from today’s Sunday Independent (Ireland). The press council upheld a complaint about an offensive and transphobic opinion column by Brenda Power. Sindo was required to publish the decision. @mams4transrights.bsky.social @jesalady.bsky.social
A half page article from the Sunday independent with the headline OMB2590 A woman and the Sunday independent.
The article outlines the complaint, the appeal and the decision.
The complaint relates to an opinion column deploring the fact that an unnamed td provided a character reference for a man convicted of sexual violence against children. A sentence in the column argued that this case threw light on the possibility that a man would “identify as a woman” in order to commit sexual violence.
The press council concluded that “a reference to a protected group [trans people] in this context should have been extremely carefully scrutinised”. It found that the Sunday independent was in violation of principle 8 of the press council code of practice.

the point is that many women *are* capable of breastfeeding, but don't try because they don't have positive models - their mother, their friends, etc - and they don't recognise themselves in the images they see of women breastfeeding. Some people can't, and there's no shame in that.

Due in 2024, but timeline now “disappearing” for  video upload on Garda road traffic reporting portal
-- It could help "take our most dangerous drivers off the roads" but opposition spokesperson says it isn't a priority for Minister for Justice. A video upload function for the Garda road traffic reporting portal was due to go live possibly in 2024, then in 2025, and then in 2026 now it has no timeline. The reporting portal with a video upload feature was supposed to simplify the process of providing evidence of road traffic offences.

My colleague @janetphorner.bsky.social proposed a motion on Monday calling for Dublin to be allowed charge a hotel bed tax. I spoke in favour because I think this makes sense, but more generally, because local authorities should have more control over how they raise money and how they spend it.

We've just launched our pre-budget ideas. The basic idea that Ireland's high costs need investment to deal with - not just money to cope. Our core proposal is a big once-off package to support households financially and to move faster off expensive fossil fuels.

Thanks @irishtimes.com for publishing my letter in today’s weekend edition. Government parties should fund the public transport network properly and run the timetable already published: www.irishtimes.com/opinion/lett...
Sir,

Cllr John Kennedy, (Letters, September 24th) asks passengers to see an extra 60c a day as the cost of a better public transport service. Many of us would settle for the service we are already paying for.

Ghost buses remain a persistent feature of Dublin’s public transport network: services that appear on Real-Time Passenger Information displays and apps, but never arrive. The Minister for Transport has called cancellation rates on some routes unacceptable, and the National Transport Authority (NTA) has been penalising operators over reliability. None of that is a revenue problem. Those journeys are already funded. Fixing them costs the passenger nothing.

Neither will fare increases deliver the 140 new services promised for 2027. New services need buses, depots and road space - and those are financed through capital expenditure, not from fares. Government's planned fare increases will cut passenger numbers according to NTA data. Some people will cancel their journeys while others will be back in cars.

On the NTA's own figures, a 15 per cent increase on fares raises about €80 million. It costs the commuter roughly €140 a year and it buys no improvement in what actually turns up. Shoppers learned to call this kind of deal shrinkflation: the same price, a smaller product. Here passengers are asked to pay more for a service that is already falling short.

Government parties should fund the network properly, and run the timetable already published.

Yours,

Eva Dowling
