I'm reminded by what Stuart Lee said about the 1980s Enterprise Allowance Scheme. Have a guaranteed income for people seeing up their own business and then allowed creative people to experiment around their art. Lee credits it with boosting the creative industries in the 80s.

Good point, well made. But do you you know who wears lanyards? Cleaners. Call centre workers. Secretaries. Office security staff. All relatively low paid. Those using the term "lanyard class" have no understanding of the world of work.

The rules may be right; they may be wrong. But, regardless of whether the rules are right or wrong, the issue is that all the other clubs followed the rules (or those that didn't were punished). So Man City got an unfair advantage by breaking the rules.

Manchester City cheated Premier League rules, the Commission found. Did it also cheat HMRC? We've examined the decision and leaked Mancini documents. We think City likely failed to pay £12m in tax. There should be a criminal investigation. Thread:

I am not joking when I say this. If you take the ingredients for your favourite recipe and just put them in a giant bowl and use a big spoon to shove it in your mouth, it is just as good as following a recipe.

But joining more than one union cos you want the support of all of them in parliamentary selections, or you want favours isn't fine All trade unionists see that for what it is, and it's not good All I'm bothered about is if you are in a union *and* if you share the values of the union movement

Ravi S @ravisubbie.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Loyalty to former union: say you worked in car industry for 20 years and were a member of Unite. But then made redundant and work in a new job where Unite are not recognised but another union is. Again staying in your old union for reasons of loyalty and joining a recognised union is fine

Ravi S @ravisubbie.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
There are some acceptable "double cards" The first is journalists who are all in the NUJ for professional reasons. But they may work for an employer, say like a council, where the NUJ are not recognised for collective bargaining. So joining a recognised union is not only ok but recommended

Today, migrant care workers are taking their message directly to Labour conference - keep your promise to the workers who came to the UK to care for our communities. They'll be joined by UNISON general secretary Andrea Egan and others. Invest in social care 🩵 Support #FairVisasNow #LabConf26
Migrant care workers rally outside Labour conference

Andrea Egan:
The NHS, social care and other essential services rely on the hard work of migrant staff.

People came to this country to help look after our loved ones on the promise of being able to settle in the country after five years.

Now the government is breaking that promise with the threat of up to 15 years of insecurity and exploitation.

The government must drop these plans, and invest properly in public services.

Andrea Egan, UNISON general secretary
will be joining workers at the rally today

Our data at @ipsosintheuk.bsky.social shows part of the reason for Labour's fortunes improving under Burnham is that they are retaining more of their 2024 vote (61% today vs 46% under Starmer). Notable drop in Lab to Green switchers. Is Burnham uniting the left?

This was April 2025. I'm curious to know if any Starmer ministers said similar things after September 2025 after the big Tommy Robinson rally in London. It was around then that the govt visibly backed off on reinforcing anti racist norms

I'm encouraged that at least some are now speaking up. But you are dead right that they should be judged exactly on the things you identify. There is still a long way to go.

Ravi S @ravisubbie.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
That's interesting. Clearly there is evidence they did say it But it didn't *feel* like it because we had Island of Strangers speech & a spineless response to the far right It's like a mirror of the views of some on immigration. Despite the evidence that is coming down, they think it's increasing

Ravi S @ravisubbie.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
I can't imagine any Cabinet minister under Starmer saying this. The Burnham govt still has more to do on responding to the far right and promoting anti racist norms. But this is good. Now need to hear more Cabinet ministers speaking out.

"Blue Labour statecraft" is a far more polite and measured phrase than I would use McSweeney and Co tried to control things in govt using the same tactics as they did in controlling the party machine. In both cases their tactics were crude, hubristic, arrogant and relied on authority not persuasion
