You are assuming the answer to the question. Which is: how should we decide if the LLM is a "consciousness"? Your answer is: LOL of course it's not. FWIW i agree. But if chat passes a Turing test for (say) 80% of average users, are we gonna decide it's alive? Or do we need a different test

Hear me out: End qualified immunity and make armed law enforcement officers carry professional liability insurance. Too many (or severe) claims and a leo is unemployable because they're uninsureable. And the massive settlements aren't the responsibility of the taxpayers.

I want to take a moment to let people know that this is not super new tech. It has existed for years, but more notably in countries that design urban infrastructure to enable people of all ages and abilities, not just the car drivers.

The Constitution allows it. South Korea has proven it works. If you want to make impeachment viable—and so much else is pointless if you don't—then it can be done by a simple majority adopting a simple rules change: vote on the verdict by secret ballot.

A Democratic Senate Should Adopt Secret Impeachment Ballots on a Priority Basis
Such a change, requiring no constitutional amendment, would free senators to vote their judgment instead of their fears

There's a reason why Somerville hasn't had a traffic death in 4 years. The city isn't perfect, but they've made a concerted effort to design many streets around people and not cars. You can still drive, but you're going to have to do so slowly and while paying attention.

Somerville is intentionally making roads harder to drive on. It’s getting results. - The Boston Globe
To make roads safer, the city says, sometimes you have to put some obstacles in drivers' way.

"But the handicapped need cars!" No, what they need are options in mobility. The tech exists to enable their freedom of independent mobility, but almost always what is lacking is the enabling infrastructure. Bike lanes and quality sidewalks serve everyone.

Our built infrastructure robs kids of their freedom of independent mobility. Streets are dominated by oversized vehicles, piloted by aggressive and distracted drivers where one mistake can turn lethal. We sacrificed child development to subsidize the auto industry.

But she also highlights how the numbers are on the side of political and social progress – of pluralism and the expansion of a Democratic vision. Most Americans support all of the changes of the last 60 years. It is a tiny extreme ethnonationalist minority that opposes this progress.

It’s the pursuit (and occasional realizations) of a more pluralistic vision of democracy that has caused the backlash. And because so much social progress happened so FAST (within one generation (Gen X)) … backlash and hostility escalated fast.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Lebowitz says it's not up to congress to decide who is eligible to vote on a nationwide basis It's potentially far-reaching reasoning (I have no idea now likely this is to survive appeal. The main precedent is a Scalia opinion in Arizona v. Inter Tribal Council, 570 US 1 (2013))
The statutory text of Section 611, and especially its “unless” clause, makes it exceedingly difficult to read the statute as anything but a nationwide ban on non-U.S. citizen voting. The “unless” clause, rightly described by amicus as “the most damning textual evidence of Congress’ overambitious intent,” [ECF No. 46 at 37], shows that Congress clearly meant to prohibit an alien from voting in a federal election even when permitted by state law. Look again at the statute: Section 611 explicitly makes it unlawful for an alien to vote in a federal election, except for state-authorized alien voting in a non-federal election. That textual exception makes it clear beyond peradventure that Congress intended to prohibit alien voting in federal elections—even if such voting was expressly authorized by state law. Section 611 makes it a crime for a certain class of people (non-citizens) to vote in any
