A thing about Japan: the relationship between customer and product did not feel adversarial. It felt like companies were constantly trying to innovate in ways that would give customers what they wanted and make their lives easier--rather than how they could trick people into paying the most.

The problem with just using the term “ai” to mean generative ai/LLMs is that it allows boosters the bad faith argument of “oh so you want to get rid of all machine learning applications” like no I like the cancer identification sorter I just think the brain rotting autocorrect should perish

I worked in a clean room making optical parts for satellites. Specifically, coating on thousands and thousands of one particular lens with a microscopic layer of chrome, which was a bit like baking cookies.

I am a Very Good Parent, and yet there are so many times when I am just at a loss. Like nothing catastrophic, just... what do? How best to respond? It's worse the older they are because you know you only have a couple more years to influence them, so what response helps them most...? 🤷‍♀️

Usually you can connect with the kids who don't read via movies. You can teach literary concepts using film examples. If you know what movies they like, you can find them a book! But now I'm talking to teens who just... don't watch movies. Or shows. Just tiktok.

I was gonna take my kid to 6 Flags for his birthday but I saw this news report about how the one in SoCal has this coaster that has been regularly giving TBI's to people for a decade but they've just been paying out all the lawsuits because it's more lucrative to do that and keep it running. 😦
