Baffling to see The Times claim that Burnham “did not mention energy” in his conference speech. Energy was referenced no fewer than 10 times, alongside a major announcement of £4bn for Great British Grid to cut connection delays and bring bills down. Britain's energy challenge was front & centre.

In August this year, for 1 month, the Government made bus journeys free for children in England. Now, new figures show that the scheme enabled more than 14 million free child journeys. One bus service in the North East had 710% more child passengers than last summer. Our reaction 👇
Photo of Michael Solomon Williams with the quote, "As well as saving families money on millions of journeys, free child bus fares encouraged people to give the bus a try, inspiring a new generation of bus users. It's great to see this efficient, sustainable form of transport being given such a boost. But even with free fares, access to buses is not equal. One in seven people live in places without a decent bus service. The Government needs to do more to reconnect these transport deserts."

Our research published last month shows that linking cleaner air to children's health is one of the most persuasive framings to build support for greater action. This should be at the heart of the Government's approach to cleaning up our air.

This is remarkable. As a result of ULEZ, children's lung health is catching up with areas outside of the capital. This is why action on air pollution matters. A child's health should never be determined by their postcode. The Mayor's leadership on this issue should be applauded.

NHS must prepare for annual summer heat pressures, says Yvette Cooper
Health secretary says global heating means UK hospitals and GPs will have to prepare for summer as well as winter peaks of demand Adapting to global heating: which UK public services are struggling in hot weather? The NHS has been warned to prepare for potential annual summer crises caused by extreme heat with the same pressures as winter, as heatwaves caused by the climate crisis become routine in the UK. The health secretary, Yvette Cooper, said NHS staff were feeling A&E pressures that would normally be expected only during flu season – and said the government would use major investment in NHS infrastructure to tackle the health service’s resilience to high summer temperatures. Reindustrialisation means investing in the industries & tech that will sustain jobs for decades to come. Anyone in the auto-industry who say that will come from anything other than EVs are flogging a dead horse. It's important govt policy recognises that.

Glad to see govt spokesperson say the "2035 ban was not up for negotiation", but nor should interim targets that get us to 2035 either. The ZEV mandate creates a clear timeline & certainty - opening it up won't help industry or workers, but instead risks leaving the UK exposed to global competition.

It is a great honour and privilege to have been appointed by the Prime Minister to serve as Foreign Secretary.

“My parents came to Britain as Jewish refugees from the Nazis. To them, Britain was both a sanctuary and a beacon of hope in the global fight against fascism. I will carry my parents’ faith in that spirit of Britain to my role representing our country.

“I will be a Foreign Secretary who fights for Britain’s interests and our values of democracy, freedom and the rule of law on the world stage.”

He promised to maintain close ties with both the EU and the United States, as well as upholding Britain’s commitments to Nato and the United Nations.

“The FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) I lead will also be at the forefront of issues which pose profound and substantial threats to justice and equality in Britain and across the world.

We will work with others on tackling the climate crisis, strengthening our partnerships for international development, and reforming our international institutions so they deliver for all countries, including the world’s poorest people.”
