Social play is key for development in many animals, yet how solitary species with single young acquire playmates has remained a quandary. We unlock this using long-term data from 31 Bornean orangutan mother-offspring pairs in our new publication in PNAS. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2621225123. 🧵

These results reveal how social influence shapes search, stopping, and choice, and how individual-level decision rules scale up to the collective level in experienced based decision making.

People copied the final choices of their peers using strong conformity, but only when they encountered ambiguous personal information. Using agent-based simulations, showed that these strategies gave rise to mild information cascades.

Ralf Kurvers @ralfkurvers.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
People in groups were more likely to stop search when the social information confirmed their own personal information and when peers agreed among each other. People in groups also took fewer samples, thus encountering fewer rare events.

Ralf Kurvers @ralfkurvers.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
We modeled the role of social influence in all three stages of decision making: sampling, stopping and final choice. Social information did not influence sampling behavior but influenced stopping and final choice.

Using the sampling paradigm, we conducted a lottery study in 5-person group. When one person made a final decision, it became visible in real time to all group members. We compared this to a solo baseline condition.

Strategic social information use emerged early in life: participants at all ages used social information most when it was close to their own belief, supported by convergent social inputs, and came from young adults.

🧵 Thread: Does the internet threaten democracy? I argue that it does in my latest piece in Science: doi.org/10.1126/scie... Here's the short version. 1/9 1/10
doi.org
The architecture of the internet creates risks for democracy
Will democracy survive the internet? Do we need to choose between Facebook’s surveillance capitalism or democracy? Layered lines of evidence can inform questions like these. When considered together, the evidence gives rise to a concerning picture, as summarized in a recent report for the European Commission that I co-led.

How developing prosocial motivations shape children’s altruism
Developmental perspectives are crucial to harnessing the human potential for altruism. We synthesise and highlight recent research on the motivations underlying children’s (costly) prosocial behaviour. The order in which children develop intrinsic, extrinsic, and strategic motivations to benefit others has implications for efforts to positively impact young people’s lives.
