When is language needed for human culture to accumulate? When observing successful behavior is not enough to recover the mental model behind it! This is an incredibly ambitious project, involving large-scale experimentation, RL and ABM modeling, and computational language analyses.

A Demographic Theory of Similarity-Biased Social Learning. Now out in PNAS, led by the incomparable @apvelilla.bsky.social . We use modeling to explore conditions for the (cultural) evolution of parochial (and anti-parochial) learning biases. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...
Humans adapt by learning from others, but risk acquiring maladaptive behaviors when learning from individuals facing different conditions. We present an evolutionary model exploring how individuals use social identity markers to select learning targets in diverse populations. Learners evolve biases that track reliable information sources: preferring similar individuals when in-group knowledge is adaptive, and dissimilar individuals when in-group behaviors are disadvantageous. Our framework demonstrates that this adaptive bias makes social learning viable even when it is costlier than individual learning. Additionally, we show that a minimum threshold of reliable cultural information is required for social learning to spread, providing a mathematical explanation for how demographic diversity drives population-level patterns of cultural segregation and assimilation.

This is such an important paper. A lot of key disagreements are not about desired outcomes, but rather about the strategies for securing those outcomes. And the rifts often come down to how much we are willing to risk in trying to secure those ends. Ketika and co explore this brilliantly!

I was supposed to finish this March 31 and then the #Claude Code leak happened, handing me the perfect opening example Some of it has been in the works for longer: it's also a version of (part of) my #DHd2025 keynote titled "What makes LLMs so irresistible?" Read it here: doi.org/10.5281/zeno...
In March 2026, an Anthropic employee released the source code of Claude Code, a wrapper around their large language model that is widely used to generate code in programming tasks. Its thousands of lines of Typescript code contained many hopeful prompts and incantations to shape Claude’s behaviour. Here are some examples: “Report outcomes faithfully”; “Never characterize incomplete or broken work as done”; “Be careful not to introduce security vulnerabilities” (prompts.ts in Anthropic 2026). There is more than a passing resemblance here to the Azande witch-doctor apprentice who, while stirring the medicine, utters: “You medicine which I am cooking, mind you always speak the truth to me. Do not let anyone injure me with his witchcraft, but let me recognize all witches. … Let me be expert at the witch-doctor’s craft so that people will give me many spears on account of my magic.” (Evans-Pritchard 1937: 93). In the case of Claude, the incantations appeared insufficient: analysis of the codebase, which according to a company executive was “pretty much 100% written by Claude Code”, revealed severe security vulnerabilities (Townsend 2026).
