So whenever I see these takes, I know they don't actually want to know what academics actually say — you wanna know how I know this? They would read the papers and not (just) the social media posts.

ok so I'm hearing both that I don't know how good ai is now because I refuse to use it and that invalidates my critiques but also apparently I'm a fake critic because I inadvertently use ai even when I'd rather not because the providers are shoving it anywhere and everywhere which is it?

You know, little things like being able to afford food, housing, healthcare, transportation, and a future for your kids. The real priorities are the “big things” — like making billionaires richer. Two years of Republican control: is your life better, or did only the billionaires get the upgrade?

Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

Fact that despite the fact that someone qualifying for student loans pretty clearly shows they don’t come from generational wealth people have still been able to be negatively polarized against student loan holders because in general we have a large population of petty vituperative people.

Alll of this. I started my career in construction, working office jobs alongside people who worked trades. Know how many 60-year-old guys I saw working as bricklayers? Doing demo? Zero. How many 50-year-old roofers there are? Zero. One reason unions fight for high wages is because careers are SHORT.

I think what I find really depressing about AI in higher education is how so many people didn't even wait for the evidence/research before we decided on telling students "how to use AI responsibly" which often includes things like checking grammar, and obviously, we shouldn't have been

Did you know that even prompting an LLM to edit your grammar might alter the semantic meaning of your text and remove your human voice? If you're in Bergen on Friday September 4 you can hear Isadora White and Marwa Abdulhai present their recent paper on this. They took human-written short essays, asked LLMs to revise them and found significant changes well beyond just copyediting. This is a large-scale computational study, but the image shared here shows two examples of how this happens.

We'll also have talks by John Gallagher, whose newsletter on AI and writing I read religiously, and by Rashid Mustafin, a PhD student at NHH, and Pedro Jacobetty. And before these public talks the AI STORIES team gets to spend two days in a workshop with these and other brilliant people - I'm so excited!

Wow, @startribune.com. This is absolutely irresponsible and needs an immediate retraction. Refuting your own headline right in the story.
Police: Shooting at Eden Prairie homecoming game was gang-related
Police did not specifically say that Somali gangs were involved, but Rep. Tom Emmer and others posted on social media calling the incident a “Somali gang crime.” This summer, Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher issued a public warning of what he described as a surge of violence involving Somali gangs.

Dems REALLY need to get their shit together pushing back against this. Bullies ALWAYS attack who they see as the weakest, the easiest to attack. Standing up to bullies is a core part of the social contract. If you don't do that, you have nothing. It's as simple & fundamental as that.

This part especially. It sums up not only what's going on, psychologically, but also how futile it is to attempt to disprove something that is not a theory but a description. It's kind of like if I was trying to disprove the horsepower metaphor in relation to the combustion engine.

In practice, AI literacy doesn’t start with building the tool for your personal use. It starts with understanding yourself as a collection of tasks who should subcontract those out to a machine. Almost no regular person’s life currently exists as such.
