IF YOU MISSED IT! Last night, we welcomed @postoctobrist.bsky.social to help tell the story of PFI, how it was thrust upon an unwilling public by about six guys, how it is completely intertwined with the story of UK transport engineering and how the Treasury used it to completely break Britain.

Ties in nicely with this (last?) week's @railnatter.uk I imagine it was a little more tricky because of the confied spaces but still mind bogglingly short sighted that TfL didn't/couldn't (#abolishtreasury) make use of historically low passenger numbers to go on a renewals frenzy.

Tonight on #Railnatter, we’re looking at the ECML between Newcastle and Edinburgh. It's one of the most beautiful lines, but operationally, it’s a mess. Intensive intercity services comes at the expense of local ones, leaving some stations among Britain’s least-used. So how do we fix it?

Tonight on #Railnatter, we look at Britain’s failing railway infrastructure, following the Lewes and Wickford derailments, both caused by track buckles. Why has our railway been left to deteriorate this far? What happens when we stop renewing it? And why is Hendy involved again?

Between Leeds and Edinburgh is 95 miles of 120/125mph, losing these 110mph trains 6 minutes over that distance. That's secondary to the fact that TPE is an intercity service and should be running intercity trains - this is exactly what we covered in a recent @railnatter.uk: youtu.be/IUaVkFaVIOE?...

2 derailments in 24 hours. 4 in 12 months. The DfT continues to underfund rail, whilst daily incidents occur on the railway and frontline staff are being pushed to the brink. All while ministers take credit for trains they didn't buy, hide behind PR and "GBR", and neglect rail.

West Yorkshire "Metro-Train" and the July 1990 "Railplan 2" showing an acquired ex-Network South East British Rail Class 307 EMU doing the honours on the Leeds-Doncaster route prior to the delivery of the Class 321 sets. #railways @noeldolphin.bsky.social @railnatter.uk flic.kr/p/2smS2ef
West Yorkshire Railplan 2 : Metro-Train : July 1990 : West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority : Metro : West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive : British Rail Provincial : Leeds : 1990. The second of the Railplan's for West Yorkshire issued in July 1990 and that looked at the delivery of Railplan 1 produced in 1989. It was produced by "Metro", the arm of the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority, the body that helped plan and coordinate transport planning; these functions survived the break up of the Metropolitan County Council and the privatisation of the directly operated bus services via the PTE and are now part of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority's scope of works.

The cover shows one of the ex- British Rail Network South East Class 307 EMU's that were moved north and painted in Metro livery to operate on the newly electrified Leeds - Doncaster route prior to the delivery of the new Class 321 fleet. They survived until 1993. With the electrification of the Airedale/Wharfedale lines in 1994/5 a batch of Class 308 multiple units migrated north to operate these services.
