The next five graphs are even less convincing, and the argumentation becomes even weaker. It was almost impossible for me to imagine how a seemingly intelligent person could have written it—but I found a secret clue buried in the text itself.

A.I. has the potential to enhance the way we live in the same way. It saved me and my colleague, Will McGrew, many hours of prowling the internet to research this essay. That left us with time to do other tasks.

In an Uber. Driver having loud phone conversation with someone in Spanish. A little annoying, but it happens. He hangs up. Says, “Mi hermano. La Migra.” And starts weeping.

Red Delicious and Granny Smith both *became* not worth eating over time. They both used to be, usually, very crisp, and the flavor is not actually bad. Over the years, both varieties got much mealier. (It's easy to get better apples today, but an heirloom Red Delicious can be good still.)

now that i've preened with it in person a few times i'm okay showing my new treasure to the internet
colorful tooled leather bow quiver attached to the tailpiece of an upright bass. it is lettered "OPBSC" and has three round, three-eyed yellow cartoon figures — the Outlanders Bluegrass mascot Lando —playing a bass, a banjo, and a mandolina beautiful brown upright bass with a beautiful colorful quiver, which the luthiers agreed are both beautiful

coders were having tremendous difficulty before. almost all software is very bad, especially big pieces of software with large teams. AI seems promising for addressing the "large teams" part.

The biggest news coming out of YouTube lately looks to have been a quiet change to its search engine: instead of "sorting" you now "prioritize" (popularity, not view count). i.e. removing one of the last remaining ways to search based on concrete metrics. You also can't search the past hour anymore.

Last term I tried an experiment: I walked into my Tech and Design Ethics class, admitted that I had *no idea* what to do about ChatGPT - so I would let them figure it out. As in: their first project was to decide and write the ChatGPT policy for the class. Here's what happened:

I’m seeing posts from people (outside of MN) about how US citizens should carry their passports. And let me say that *inside* MN, we are calmly responding to requests with: “No, I don’t have to show you any documentation.” Because that’s how you protect everyone, regardless of immigration status.

update: here is the AI policy i wrote for my doc seminar this term (i have already located the typo and fixed it, which tbh is like 60% of the point of posting it in public)
I have adopted the following policy on the use of generative Al systems, which is adapted from one originally written by Prof. Susannah Paletz.

There are two primary goals of this doctoral seminar. The first is to familiarize you with Science and Technology Studies as a literature, through its intellectual history and breadth of critical considerations. The second goal is to train you in the scholarly practices of reading large amounts of textual material quickly and effectively, synthesizing and discussing that material accurately and in detail, and then using the insights, methods, theories, and approaches of those texts in your own intellectual work. My expectation is that you will not use any generative artificial intelligence systems (like ChatGPT, Claude, etc) to complete your work in this class. Any use of Al-generated work to brainstorm, outline, write, edit, etc, your work will be considered an academic integrity violation. These systems are often inaccurate, are bad at summarizing complex materials, and relying on them will make your work worse and less interesting. The use of these programs does not serve your development as a thinker, writer, and scholar.

To quote Professor Andrew Perfors, "As a teacher, what I want to teach, and what I want people to practice doing, is the process of creation itself. I don't give a single goddamn flying fuck what ChatGPT thinks about the essay prompt. The purpose of having students write an essay is not to fill the world with yet more words on the topic of the essay: the point is to find out what my students think about the topic. Actually, the point is even deeper - it is to make them go through the process of figuring out for themselves what they think, and to wrestle with putting those thoughts into words so that they can clarify things to themselves and improve their ability to share those thoughts clearly. This process cannot be short-circuited by outsourcing it to Al; to do so removes the entire fucking point."
