ABSTRACT
In September 2026, the European Commission published a proposed EU KIDS Act, responding to the
demand for restrictions and further design obligations applying to digital services accessible to children,
including social media. This Article argues that regardless of what one believes about the merits of this
policy direction, the EU KIDS Act is not the legislative text we need. The scope and drafting are little
short of chaotic, full of holes, enormous ambiguities, and unintended consequences. Recitals contradict
articles. The use of scope borrowed from other pieces of legislation not designed for this purpose brings
services into scope that should not be subject to the relevant provisions, like book-recommendation
websites, music services, or exercise trackers. The infrastructural requirement for assurance of age and
parental responsibility attestation simply omits enormous issues of complex families and childhoods.
Complex design obligations are written in ways that can be plausibly interpreted as implicitly prohibiting
entire swathes of products, such as voice assistants. This Article outlines these issues, and many more.
The Commission should withdraw this proposal and reissue a workable and realistic tex

Worth noting that the 'white heat' speech (1963) contained a bunch of futuristic assertions about automation that wouldn't seem out of place in a Sam Altman or Jensen Huang speech today
Let us be frank about one thing. It is no good trying to comfort ourselves with the thought that automation need not happen here; that it is going to create so many problems that we should perhaps put our heads in the sand and let it pass us by. Because there is no room for Luddites in the Socialist Party. If we try to abstract from the automative age, the only result will be that Britain will become a stagnant backwater, pitied and condemned by the rest of the world."Because we have to recognise that automation is not just one more process in the history of mechanisation, if by mechanisation we mean the application of technology to eliminate the need for human muscle. The essence of modern automation is that it replaces the hitherto unique human functions of memory and of judgment. And now the computers have reached the point where they command facilities of memory and of judgment far beyond the capacity of any human being or group of human beings who have ever livedIn America technological change is beginning to move now even more rapidly in the white collar professions than in engineering, because it is much easier to programme operations of costings, of wages sheets and tax schedules or of insurance premiums, than it is to programme an engineering job. And let us be clear that in America today and in Britain tomorrow we face massive redundancies in office work no less than in industry.Or listen to the problem in another way. We can now set a programme-controlled machine tool line so that, without the intervention of any human agency, it can produce a new set of machine tools in its own image. And when machine tools have acquired, as they now have, the faculty of unassisted reproduction, you have reached a point of no return where if man is not going to assert his control over machines, the machines are going to assert their control over man.

Least surprising plot twist in the history of pretend-climate-tech. We're deep into the era of every "climate tech" person and company who was insincere in their climate concern whipping the mask off and showing their real selves. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
Direct air capture startup Spiritus was founded to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and bury it underground. Now, it’s pivoting to selling that CO2 to help extract oil, as the clean-tech industry recalibrates following US federal funding cuts and a corporate climate retreat.
The Los Alamos, New Mexico-based company has signed letters of intent with three US oil and gas producers across the Rockies, Midwest and Gulf Coast. It plans to supply more than 3 million tons of carbon dioxide annually for enhanced oil recovery, or EOR, a technique that injects CO2 into aging oil wells to extract residual crude. The deal could support the production of more than 70 million additional barrels of oil, said Spiritus Chief Executive Officer Charles Cadieu in an interview.Cuts in support and sales

The shift comes after a difficult period for the industry. Last year, the Trump administration canceled the Department of Energy’s support for about half of the 21 direct air capture projects it inherited from the Biden administration, according to Bloomberg. At the same time, the sector’s largest corporate buyer, Microsoft, cut its purchases by about 80 percent in the first half of this year, while the company increased its focus on artificial intelligence. Startup Noya has shut down, while True North Carbon moved its first commercial pilot project to Canada.

Many carbon removal companies “have now begun to view the U.S. as a potentially unreliable place to expand, and are looking toward other geographies where there is greater political and regulatory predictability,” said Giana Amador, CEO of the Carbon Removal Alliance, during a panel at Climate Week NYC on Monday.

Spiritus expects to have its first commercial plant operating within two years. Critics s

This is going to be a thread of AI greenwashing getting pumped out at New York Climate Week Here's one from today: Siemens, raking in MOUNTAINS of $$ from selling gas turbines to data centres (not mentioned) says: “we are racing to mitigate this as fast as possible" apnews.com/article/clim...
On the other hand, Eva Riesenhuber, the head of sustainability at the German automation company Siemens, and Evelyn Wang, vice president for energy and climate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said AI is too important to humanity and will help tackle climate change.

Data centers adding to climate and water problems “is not forever,” according to Wang, who told The Associated Press that data centers are five years away from being water neutral and about a decade away from no longer adding to planet-warming emissions.

Acknowledging these concerns, Riesenhuber said “we are racing to mitigate this as fast as possible because we are hooked on the intelligence, and we do need the intelligence to design the future that this planet needs.”a chart showing siemens gas turbine sales will add emissions the equivalent to pakistan

Paris, September 15, 2026 – TotalEnergies and Mistral announce a 3-year joint program representing an investment of more than €100 million aimed at developing a new generation of frontier AI models to support TotalEnergies' geosciences experts in the exploration, characterization and development of oil and gas reservoirs.

Driving Innovation by Combining AI, Geoscience Expertise and Subsurface Data

This partnership will draw on the latest advances in artificial intelligence, particularly agentic AI, to combine next to 10 petaflops of data with nearly a century of knowledge, know-how and expertise accumulated by TotalEnergies in geosciences and reservoir engineering. The objective is to develop new frontier models, able to integrate, process and interpret large volumes of data in order to generate multiple scenarios for the development of exploration opportunities, as well as for optimizing and extending the life of existing projects.

TotalEnergies and Mistral will establish a joint scientific laboratory combining the subsurface know-how and expertise of TotalEnergies' subsurface teams with the scientific and technological capabilities of Mistral, a European AI champion, to develop solutions tailored to the specific needs of the Company's businesses.
