this was very interesting/informative (and kind of funny...sorry for all those software engineers though. I wouldn't blame them for becoming cybercrimininals tbh)

hi Malte, happy to see the book doing well! hope you see this is meant constructively: it's disappointing to see you both presenting in an antideutsch club which claims on its official website there was no Palestinian identity pre-1945 and that the word 'intifada' = calling for extermination of Jews

Conversely, the study found that the continued expansion of renewables and low-carbon technologies in the North Sea would reduce reliance on volatile gas imports much faster than allowing new drilling, with energy from new wind and solar from the latest government auction expected to produce six times more electricity by 2030 than new drilling licences would.

On employment, the campaign group Uplift points out that the number of jobs supported by the oil and gas industry has more than halved in the last decade – from 441,000 to 214,000 today – despite previous governments issuing hundreds of new licences in six separate licensing rounds.

And on tax, critics have questioned the scale of the benefit once you take into account state subsidies to oil and gas companies, which globally run into the hundreds of billions of pounds.

He also highlighted a central challenge with the AI race: Top-tier AI companies raise billions of dollars to pay for the vast computing resources needed to continue improving AI systems. If everyone uses AI systems that people largely don’t pay for, there would be no way to finance continued frontier AI development.

“One probable outcome of an open-weight-model-dominant world is full AI communism, which is precisely what China proposes: rather than a market product, AI is a ‘public good’ which will ultimately be provided by the state as a kind of ‘digital public infrastructure,’” Dean Ball, OpenAI’s head of strategic futures, said in an X post Friday.
Ball, a former Trump administration official, called such a scenario a “dystopian hellscape” and said he expected the Trump administration to make moves toward reducing the use of open-source models. Ball later

this is part of a bigger project on environmentally harmful uses of AI - building on prior research taking apart 'AI for sustainability' narratives by e.g. @ketanjoshi.co @sashamtl.bsky.social @paulschuetze.bsky.social, we see fossil fuels as the most egregious instance of a more fundamental problem
Independent researchers have shown that claims about ‘AI for sustainability’ are typically speculative and poorly-evidenced. 18 They also overlook inconvenient dynamics such as the Jevons paradox (where efficiency improvements often increase aggregate resource consumption, by reducing costs).19 Yet these critiques point to a more fundamental problem. In a global economy that is not organised around planetary boundaries and human needs, but economic growth and private profit, there is no reason to believe that AI tools which are predominantly being developed on a commercial basis (and which will have to be astronomically profitable to justify the vast capital investments involved) will be used only or primarily for environmentally beneficial activities. Any scientific breakthroughs and efficiency gains enabled by AI are as likely to be used to scale up unsustainable business activities as to promote sustainability. 20 In fact, given the greater profitability of environmentally-harmful sectors like fossil fuels and mining and the greater resources of the actors responsible,21 it is far more likely that AI will be used for the former

ah there it is. given what we know about the industry's concerted involvement in the "competiveness" deregulation push, CSDDD rollback etc I would be shocked if there isn't fossil fuel money helping amplify the whole Europe 2031 narrative

Far from being a budding economist, the young Greenspan was a talented musician, who studied the clarinet at New York's renowned Julliard School of Music.

He played in a band with Stan Getz, the legendary jazz saxophonist, before touring the country with the Henry Jerome Band. This peripatetic lifestyle gave him a valuable practical insight into the workings of US business.
