family was asked about new year’s resolutions. i said to learn to dye yarn (bought a natural kit in summer 2021) and to knit a sweater out of this sampler i have (bought late 2022) which will be dyed. each of the 12 yarns will be a different color.

love this little spindle. spun 46 yards of ultra fine yarn with it. about 45 wraps per inch. estimate 720 yards per 50 grams. for comparison, malabrigo lace is about 30 wpi and 470 yards. this looks comparable to a single ply of 2/18 weaving yarn, which i also measured at 45 wpi.

went to the local rural art gallery, having a fiber show right now. bought some variegated wool to spin (i’ve only spun undyed so far). the blue is super fine, the red is sorta fine. there’s some incredibly cheap handspun yarn for sale, but it’s also incredibly coarse.

i carded waste wool and spun it. closest to the whorl was already there. then there’s fairly nice soft waste from combs (second pic). then commercial merino top scraps (not pictured). and finally some of the worst waste from the combs (last 2 pics), full of kemp and matted bits.

made 59 grams of chunky 2-ply yarn on the wheel. malabrigo rios for scale in the third pic. knitted some up on 6 mm needles. was thinking of making a blanket. math from this sample says i’d need 5 kg. that’d take me a solid week to spin. as in no sleep, no eat. 😂

you can just comb your hair from your comb into some merino and spin it if you want to

ignorant take trying to stir shit up. the 2022 buffalo tops shooting is very similar to the charleston church shooting, and in the same state as the ceo assassination so we can more fairly compare. and he was charged with terrorism. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_Bu...

used the wheel to give this 1/3 skein yarn more twist. i use it for darning, figure it’ll hold up better this way. added less twist than i thought after wetting and thwacking it.

family watching some bbc historical show: “they mix wood ash in water, and they get caustic soda to clean dishes with” me, in the next room spinning yarn: “THEY DO NOT GET CAUSTIC SODA. THAT’S SODIUM HYDROXIDE! THEY GET POTASH, POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE!”

A great pet peeve of mine is when clothing companies refer to plastic garments as "vegan leather." Throwing a virtuous health halo around a petroleum product is wild. Next it'll be all-natural organic cyanide

Presented without apology: When the eel is a fellow Mixed with tasty marshmallow...
Drawing of a moray eel as part of a s'more, sitting on a graham cracker, while above his rest layers of chocolate, marshmallow, and more graham cracker. The eel is flopped well over the cracker, and looks distraught. This is the sort of thing his mother warned him about.

The text on the picture reads:
"That's a S'moray."

In the bottom right corner are the initials JWG, which might stand for "Jesuits Wag Generously" but doesn't. That's what dogs do. Those are my initials.

So I’m not trying to dunk on this specific person, but people have such weird ideas of what emergencies will look like, and they’re largely based on idealized movies and prepper fantasies. They imagine a world where 98% of the population dies and you can pick and choose what you want.
I'm skeptical that a darning needle would be a necessary item in a hypothetical emergency kit, especially considering the vast resources likely available in most urban areas.

#canning questions: i’m gonna pressure can this turkey/duck stock (with proper lids) after scraping the fat off the top. should i just leave it in the classico jars* or move to quarts? and should i mix the dark brown drippings in front with them? or save for something else?

i made 2 gallons of stock from the mesquite smoked turkey & duck and it is unbelievably amazing. 2 T butter, bit of rosemary olive oil, 2 large onions, 1 shallot, pound of carrots, most of a celery, 4 small bay leaves, some thyme and sage from the garden, 1 T salt, and 1/2 t msg. heaven.
