Roman Arles is amazing! The museum and remains really make you realise how the Rhone was the economic superhighway of the entire region. I came here to see a portrait of Gaius Caesar, but left blown away by the 30m barge excavated in 2011 & conserved with nuclear radiation, freeze drying & resin!

Working women are frequently attested in the #Roman empire: the funerary stele of Sentia Amarantis depicts the deceased tapping wine from a barrel. She was an inn-keeper and died at the age of 45. The stele was set up by her husband. From Augusta Emerita/Mérida, 3rd c. AD. #ReliefWednesday 🏺 📷 me

just received proofs of my latest article, forthcoming with postmedieval journal: "The invention of blackness in Ovid's Metamorphoses." (a new reading of the Phaethon myth in Bks 1 and 2)
"The invention of blackness in Ovid's Metamorphoses." Abstract: In Ovid's Metamorphoses (1.750-2.365), the Roman poet gives an aetiology for the invention of blackness via the myth of Phaethon, whose failure to control his father's solar chariot leads to the scorching of the earth. This article situates Ovid's myth of Phaethon within ancient discourses of race, contextualizing the sequence within ancient environmental theory, racial affect theory, and the melancholic tensions of Rome's enslaving practices. The article concludes with an analysis of the reception of Ovid's myth of Phaethon in Rita Dove's The Darker Face of the Earth (1994).

This is accompanied by a dramatized scene in which Tiberius is seen teaching Caligula how to be sexually adventurous (in an orgy no less)--not helped by the fact that the acting is terrible, as is the production quality and directing. Compare the new Netflix Cleopatra which is infinitely better.

One of the latter talking heads at one point says that the Romans "had no sexual morality", implying they were very sex positive or something akin to aspects of our current culture. Of course, nothing could be further from what we know, not least in their condemnation of Tiberius & Caligula!

Second, there are colleagues I respect on this show, but I think their interviews must have been edited beyond recognition, because their comments reinforce this simple narrative, though generally they say far far more sensible things than the journalists they also interview.

First, the narrator tells us an extremely straightforward narrative. Nothing is problematized. No doubt is ever expressed about "what happened". No sources are ever mentioned. It's very much an A happened, then B, then C thing. We just "know" this is how it all played out.

Today I taught the Netflix docudrama series "Roman Empire: Reign of Blood", the Caligula season, as an ad hoc addition to the end of semester, and I didn't realize that something like this could be this BAD. Very bad. Both the documentary and the drama elements.

Let’s not forget that he wrote this review while under this investigation.
“His specific arguments on this topic, however, are deeply unsatisfying. First—and he calls this “obvious”—loving what and how you study “is routinely implicated in the enabling and justification of the predatory behavior that directly confronts women and people of other marginalized gender identities in the academy.” What on earth does “implicated” mean here? If you love the Iliad, you are implicated in sexual harassment? If you do sexually harass someone, you typically defend yourself because you love the Iliad? Don’t love your work as it may lead you to sexually harass someone?! “Routinely?!””
