Thinking about the various scandals in academia regarding data fraud and broken peer review. First, I’m incredibly grateful for the network of friends and colleagues who read my work, improve it, and save me from errors. A good editor is an amazing gift.

Yes. Progressive voices trained in antiquity have been talking about this for *years* and *years*. There are unfortunately still folks in Classics that will jump on any bandwagon that gives Classics as a field more attention in the hopes of helping “save” Classics +

Repeating here my reply to this post about Alito who in saying he airs a “controversial” view poses as courageous… in his own personal safe space of the WSJ. The real work here is in calling a false view “controversial.” THAT is step 1 in making it a matter of debate and opinion (judicial opinion!)

This post argues that there was a demonstrable shift away from aes grave c. 240 in the votive deposits at Vicarello. Prior to 240 BCE aes grave and struck bronzes exist in near equal numbers, but after 240 BCE aes grave drops off and struck material strongly persists.

lately I've been working on a project relating to role of ancient thought (esp. Cicero) in 19th c. racializing discourses; came across this chilling use of "divide et impera" by 19th c. philologist Friedrich Max Müller:
The series of four lectures Max Müller delivered at the Royal Institution during February and March 1870 has often been regarded as the founding gesture of the comparative study of religion (see, for example, Sharpe 1986: 35). Defining religion broadly as ‘the faculty of apprehending the Infinite,’ Max Müller attempted to place the study of religion on a scientific foundation (1873:20). A science of religion had to be based on a comparison, since, as Max Müller insisted, ‘all higher knowledged is acquired by comparison, and rests on comparison’ (1873: 12). In adopting a global scope for the science of religion, Max Müller argued that comparison had to be guided by classification. “Let us take the old saying, Divide et impera,” he declared, “and translate it som
