absolutely fucking incredible news for public health in canada that a safer supply organization successfully fought the constitutionality of drug possession trafficking laws for not providing any legal way to operate. selfless life-saving work that is actually being identified and respected as such.

But in her judgment on their constitutional challenge on Tuesday, Murray concluded that a non-medicalized safer supply program is urgently needed to save lives.

And with no legal source of drugs available for such a program, and no legal "safety valves" in the CDSA that would support setting one up, she found such a program "is legally and practically incapable of being exempted."

She said part of the CDSA "unjustifiably infringes" on two parts of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and deprives DULF members the "right to life and security of the person."

She gave Parliament six months to find a way to allow for a "pathway to non-medicalized safer supply."

We hope this person recovers from their serious injuries. As we explained last week at the Transportation Standing Committee meeting, parking lot crashes involving pedestrians should be included within municipal reports and open data. They can be prevented by taking action.

With the conversations happening here today, I'm thinking about how Ellis gets to have a "second chance" without doing any of the work to change or even meaningfully apologise to the scores of women he harmed and manipulated. All he had to do was wait a while.

Why did last-week-me decide that I was fine with a 50-minute bus ride this afternoon? I do not know, but now I have no other option. I'll make sure to bring my noise-cancelling earbuds so I don't want to internally scream.

There’s an Israeli app claiming to turn a politician’s supporters into “digital fighters” by feeding them AI-generated replies for “rewards.” It was just used for the first time in Canadian politics — that we know of. I'm teaming up with @nationalobserver.com to share @rorywh.bsky.social's scoop!!

Sometimes a drug trip is a profound experience where you realize that you’ve been carrying pain in your heart for years, that you can forgive yourself. Other times you come up with a concept called “gay money” (money that’s gay) and you text your friend “gay money” days later. Both are healing. ❤️‍🩹

Friendly reminder that Duolingo was initially concieved to trick people into translating articles for free, which they later used as training data for MTL algorithms. Duolingo's primary purpose has NEVER been about teaching you a language, even from the start! slate.com/technology/2...

If it doesn’t charge users and, so far, doesn’t serve them any ads, how does Duolingo make money? It tricks you into working as an unpaid translation service. At the end of some lessons, Duolingo will ask you if you want to practice by translating a real-world document. Which will turn out to be, say, a BuzzFeed article. By melding together enough stabs at this task from high-level Duolingo users, the app can render a surprisingly accurate translation. Which is worth good money. So far, Duolingo has contracts with BuzzFeed and CNN to translate stories from English into languages such as Spanish, French, and Portuguese. This service is already earning Duolingo hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, but von Ahn predicts he will be adding a raft of new clients soon. “The language translations market is huge,” he says. “It’s a $30 billion per year market.”

After being told a previous sketch with the words "Fuck ICE" was "needlessly hateful". So I felt I should make an apology. Sorry the message wasn't loud enough, clear enough, and didn't include Fuck the Pedo-in-Chief and all his fascist followers. It's not needless hate. It's positive intolerance.

Still no word from the province about the student bus passes. Just “hints”

Kathryn Morse Councillor District 10 on facebook:

STUDENT BUS PASSES; KEARNEY LAKE; PROPOSED HOUSING ON RUFUS AVENUE; SOCCER FIELDS
FREE BUS PASSES VALID UNTIL SEPTEMBER 11
It's back to school next week and families are no doubt wondering what is going on with the free Halifax Transit student pass. The current bus passes for students in grades 7-12 are still valid but only until September 11. The provincial government cancelled $1.2 million in funding for the transit pass in last spring's budget, leaving the program in limbo.
The free student pass not only allowed students to travel back and forth to school by bus, it enabled them to use Halifax Transit for outside activities and part time jobs. The benefits included more independence for teens, more affordability for their families, and less congestion on our roads.
The free transit pass was initiated by Halifax Regional Council in 2021 as a pilot program for schools in downtown Dartmouth. In 2024 the Houston government directed HRM to make the pass available to grade 7-12 students and provided funding to expand the program. Then in a surprise to HRM, the Province withdrew funding last spring.
There have been hints that funding for the student bus pass may be reinstated by the Province, but it's down to the wire with the passes only valid for two more weeks.
