On Sally Rooney - we are not an overly political shop but books have always been about freedom of thought and expression, and we support that. We are able to continue to stock Sally’s books, and we will continue to sell them. Jo and Chris

You really nail the feelings around SEND, I worked with high school kids for a time, but faced it as a parent for primary school, no easy road, and I take my hat off to the parents.

THEM BONES

suggestive of cannibalism
bones have been found in caves
broken and gnawed by our neolithic ancestors

pseudo-christian white nationalist politicians
have been found in congress gnawing bribes
suggestive of economic cannibalism

ted cruz craves a “mexican on monday”
slurping blood from undocumented calvaria
on the tailgate of an unmarked ford explorer

mike johnson who nibbles knuckles
under his desk behind a locked door
claims he “doesn’t know anything about that”

cinnabar stained bones found in certain strata
suggest deliberate caretaking
and ritual ceremony

shitty grifters smeared with trump diaper slime
licking their greedy fingers suggests that
dc is unceremoniously drowning innocents

@thebrokenspine.co.uk #PoemsAbout #Bites I tried. As much as a woman with a stomach ache on a Friday afternoon can. I will be reading the rest later.
October Drizzle

I am the line between the pink silkiness of a sparrow's chirp and the cobalt anvil of an owl's hoot. Once a blanket of clouds covers me, I turn into an October drizzle. Then, I seep into the basement of your dreams. Slowly, like drops of navy blue onto the remaining song notes.

Even though you're pulling them shut, the doors swing on the threshold of my low voice and an underground quiet. They're ajar, sliding between uncharted moonlight and your carpeted imprints.

midnight —
settling into the background
of your sleep

From my out of print collection "Port of Souls" for #PoemsAbout #Bites and @thebrokenspine.co.uk
Hand Biters

Always snap at the hand that feeds,
cossets, cuddles and hugs,

fists, hits and kicks. Oppose,
depose, make of it yourself.

Pull on the leash, snap the manacle,
challenge this ships captain,

sit on your plastic chair. Tell
your voices you'll decide yourself.

If she does not wake you know your job.
Before she closed her eyes she rehearsed

tasks that you must be complete. How
to empty her home, sell it, pass

your childhood on to others. Be firm
In what must be done. Make yourself.

Good morning! My poem for #PoemsAbout #Bites is a revision of a poem I wrote for Paul Brookes @thewombwellrainbow.bsky.social ekphrastic challenge with art by @karenpgonzalez.bsky.social Thank you as always to @alanparrywriter.co.uk and @thebrokenspine.co.uk I'll be back later!
Poem:
Choices: Divergence, Convergence

In the woods, you choose a road,
this one, or the other,

perhaps they are the same—or not—

perhaps you meet a snake with jeweled
lapis scales,

perhaps he offers
you this or that,
his tongue flicking words
you catch poison-sweet
on your tongue--

perhaps instead
you see a wave of wildflowers,
nodding their heads,
scenting the path

just before the strike, the bite.

Art work by Karen Pierce Gonzalez, a snake in spring green, aqua, yellow, and orange, studded with round blue jewels or buttons. Black background.

Happy #PoemsAbout day people. I hope you all have a good one. Here is a fun one for #Bites #Poetry #Writing
Biter's Block

Wood creaks between my jaws.
Coarse rubber and the tang of metal on my tongue as I sink my teeth
into the pencil.

The prompt is #Bites.

I roll the wet, splintered shaft
along serrated ivory edges
and ponder.

Snake bites?
     Flea bites?
          Biting an apple?
A crust of jam and bread?
                                                ... His shoulder?

I wonder how to convey in lyrical flights
the feelings and notions arising from 'bites'.

But I munch on in vain
at the well chewed observer of an empty page.

2B, or not 2B?

The letters have long since succumbed
to dental destruction.

the smile problem

my mother always told me
not to show my teeth
in photographs

you see,
a smile and a threat
are simply
the difference between
having teeth and
using them

sometimes
i still catch myself
smiling into the dark
like a feral animal
searching for meat
between the teeth

ocean's teeth

beyond the shore line sirens sing
their beauty treacherous and still
a most facetious flimsy thing
quietly cutting at my will

without a doubt I wade inside
resolve dissolves within the brine
towards their eerie smiles I ride
forgetting everything that's mine

sharp teeth unveiled — I am their prey
silky illusions fades to dust
unwillingly their song I trust
never to see the light of day
