Social media is a paranoia machine. It makes connections explicit, though not transparent. It not only allows you to trace ties between people, institutions, and events, but also continually produces new ties. On social media, everything becomes connected, and thus potentially suspicious

That's not genAI, that's computer programming that's been around since the 90s. My dad is a computer scientist who developed the non-linear algorithms for it, using mammograms. GenAI bros want us to think it's all the same so we think positively of their crap, but one is actual science.

I remain impressed with how much of the conversation around AI glosses over how often it gets things wrong in a “of course everyone knows this” way. It is the central and unfixable structural flaw of LLMs.

It’s just really annoying that now when people employ the trope of “you wouldn’t hit a man with glasses?” you have to respond with “what kind of glasses?” life was so much simpler in my day.

With regard to the overt and jaw-dropping use of public money to manufacture and broadcast Trump politicals ads, I'm just spitballing here, but maybe, perhaps, if the U.S. Supreme Court didn't give the president blanket immunity from prosecution for crimes he wouldn't feel so comfortable criming.

Are there still straight men out there who don't comprehend how many more women we'd pull by pulling off gay standards of dress, grooming and general taste? I mean, we'd still need to overcome being relentless assholes, but that's just a given. We've worked around that one for centuries.

This should be next to the definition of gaslighting as an example. This kind of "control" that "you want" is at the core of AI, and it is all that is wrong with it.

As it is Skynet Day, it seems as good a time as any to share that data center based LLM Ai is caught in a death spiral which is going largely unreported in the media. In short, major insurers are creating carve outs for Ai, refusing to insure it, causing corporations to abandon its front facing use.

This is set up for laughs, but it’s actually one of the best demonstrations I’ve seen of how being capable of producing convincing sounding language and understanding meaning are two completely different things. A chatbot does not understand you, it just has automated responses based on your words.

They have whiplash. Is A.I. the future or is it the end of jobs? It can't be both (they took 1900 hours of AP classes so they know they can figure that out for themselves). Where are all the professors and why are they all in a seminar about A.I. instead of inspiring them or telling them what to do?

The most crucial part in each "AI Winter," & the thing that I genuinely think cannot come soon enough, is when we as a culture remember that we're able to disambiguate the term "AI" & we go back to actually descriptively naming the process(es) we mean. Really can't wait for that to come around again

A point I frequently make when talking about chatbots is that their output only seems to make sense because we are making sense of it. And worse, we can only do that sense-making by projecting a mind behind the text, something we do reflexively. >>

I think these people want validation for their choice to use the products. They push an inevitability narrative, talk about "happy medium" and "pragmatism", but critical refusal is a very pragmatic strategy in the face of unethical tech. "Responsible use" is a back door to dependance/integration.

A phenomenon I've noticed recently is people trying to occupy some untenable middleground wrt to the use of systems sold as "AI" -- this is a position where people try to recognize the harms of this tech but also hold space for "responsible" or "ethical" use. 🧵>>
