repost if you’re older than this calendar that’s been barely hanging on in grandma’s house since september 1996
an old monthly paper tear-away calendar attached to a wooden board hanging on the wall. the calendar is old and yellow barely hanging on. the date on it is from september 1996, with the month starting on sunday and ending thirty days later on monday. at the bottom of the calendar page, it says “September 2 Labor Day, 14 Rash Hashanah 23 Yom Kippur.”

I’ve spent this morning morbidly watching the MTV channels close down and the final songs played were: MTV Music - Video Killed the Radio Star (Buggles) Club MTV - Don’t Stop the Music (Rihanna) MTV 90s - Goodbye (Spice Girls) MTV 80s - Together in Electric Dreams (Oakey and Moroder)

If some guy stole my shit and made millions off it while wiping out my job prospects, and you, as my friend, bought that guy's cheap mass market replica of my shit, you and i would for obvious reasons have a problem. It being a massive company, not a guy, actually makes it even more of a problem.

I mean, Leppard were never really a “hair” band, so the guy’s opinion is suspect anyway.

It had a lot to do with how record companies were selling CDs, especially for rock and alternative artists. They held back commercial singles to get you to buy the album, or marketed promo only singles to certain markets. Apple has five AAA Top 20 hits but only one Billboard Hot 100 due to this.

40 years ago we’d have congressional hearings falsely accusing metal bands of putting backwards messages in their songs that told kids to kill themselves & now we have a planet-killing chatbot that’s all like “bet you won’t commit suicide chickenshit bitch” & the government is like here’s $5 billion

I think about this a lot. There is an argument that “Hysteria” is the Mount Everest of the form. Mutt and the band threw everything they could at the structure of rock and this was as much as it could take and still wildly succeed. Try to do more and it’s nonsense. Try to do less, it’s reactionary.

Revisiting Kiss a bit since Frehley’s death. They’re really not that great a band, if we’re honest. They stumble on a hook, then underserve it with single-entendres. But this! This song has a great feel all the way through. Wonder if Frehley actually played on it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m_c...

1/ A longtime Wired editor just wrote a mush-brained essay about how he totally missed the political rot of Silicon Valley (& still doesn't get it). But in the late 1990s, a Wired journalist warned of a toxic ideology bubbling up from tech. Paulina Borsook has largely been erased. Let's change that

Becoming increasingly clear we’re gonna have to build a parallel infrastructure for all the media we really love. The reason all of this is happening under the color of law is hyperconsolidation, dissent being traded straight up for merger approval, or fear of harassment.

Death, love, sex, mistakes, marriage and 'More.' Pulp is back after 2 decades
Pulp was the wittiest, bitterest star in the Britpop constellation. On More, the band's first new album in 24 years, singer Jarvis Cocker is learning to trust his feelings.

Just as interesting? Songs marketing tried to ruin, hammering us again and again, but it was too damn strong. This one stands head and shoulders above that crowd. Soundtracking cruise ship squares only made it seem *more* subversive. Johnny Yen’s got that lotion in the cabin next door…

I find it unfair at times that Hysteria gets criticized for things it didn’t - couldn’t - dream of doing. It’s just a pop album crafted by big dreamers in a desolate Dutch studio. It would be like the monoculture rejecting Nevermind because we were annoyed that kids started wearing natty sweaters.

Bad Company, White Stripes, Soundgarden? Nicky Hopkins, Carol Kaye and Zevon? All fairly mainstream choices when it comes to rock music. If anything, this year’s class leaned slightly *away* from pop with Mariah Carey not getting a nod.

Lord, so many. Mott the Hoople, Super Furry Animals, Blur… But if we really want to talk about English superstars who never registered here, probably the originals: Tommy Steele, Cliff Richard. And they had hits here, but KLF mania was nowhere near what it was in the UK.

I’ve had tinnitus for 25 years. Growing up around large farm equipment followed by a career in sound wasn’t the best. But I’ll say this, I’ve come a long way in my acceptance and want to encourage sound creatives: Tinnitus and hearing aids? It’s not the end. In fact, it can make your work better.
