I think in more normie spaces though it was a combination of the weird japan trend bringing stuff like hentai to the forefront (often as something of a punchline) and the deep-seated perception of animation as a children’s medium where anime often did not fit aesthetically in many people’s minds.

I’ll just add to this that I don’t think this stigma that existed in a lot of places suggests that anime wasn’t growing in popularity at the time. To be honest I think a lot of it was a backlash type reaction to it—see also the way the gaming press was treating Japanese games at the time.

I think broader negativity was significantly more pronounced in an art context, but even with the popularity of Sailor Moon and DBZ your average non-anime fan thought of it as weird and pornographic (yes even sailor moon). This was also peak “weird Japan” era

You either weren’t alive in the 90s-00s or weren’t interacting with normal people in a way that tipped them off to your interest in anime if you sincerely think there was never any negative sentiment toward it in the US at the time. The image of all anime as degenerate pornography was very pervasive

Also, it would have been doubly important for anime media to cultivate healthy localization discourse, as the anime scene was basically ground zero for bad localization takes. But alas, nothing was done, and now nothing is done today because "ohh but only bad people talk about this". It sucks!

But localization discourse never became a regular thing. Of course, anime media isn't the only one guilty of this, but they do still deserve outsized blame because they of all people should have understood its importance. And so, the culture war grifters ended up taking over the field uncontested.

Of course, both of these ideas were horribly misguided. A young industry is the best time for critical voices to make a real difference, and because localization is the window through which the foreign art is perceived, it should go without saying that it absolutely should be regularly talked about!

English anime media on the other hand was preoccupied with treating anime publishers with kid gloves because "they could die if we say mean words and that'd be supporting piracy" and thinking that they're here to talk about Art and not Products and localization matters fall under Product Talk

English games media was completely unequipped to handle localization discourse. To them it was the unquestioned norm that Games Are In English, and the idea never even occurred to them that they should talk about how that happens with foreign games.

Echoing what I've said in the past, my scalding take is that it was inevitable that localization discourse would be dominated by grifters because the voices that could have made a difference never tried to cultivate a healthy environment of localization discourse. The land was ceded without a fight

Hanna Bergholm's new movie looks like an interesting new interpretation of the traditional changeling story. Your child is somehow wrong and evil – but it's NOT a complete intruder like a cuckoo, but instead something that you carried and gave birth to yourself. What could be more dreadful?

Yön lapsi I Virallinen traileri (6.11.)
Tulossa elokuvateattereihin 6.11. Hanna Bergholmin psykologisessa trillerissä YÖN LAPSI lapsista haaveilevat suomalainen Saga (Seidi Haarla) ja britti Jon (Rupert Grint) muuttavat suomalaisen metsän keskelle taloon, jossa Saga on viettänyt lapsuuden kesät. Pian he saavat terveen pojan, mutta pikkuhiljaa Sagan valtaa pelottava tunne, että vaativassa vauvassa on jotain outoa. Tuoreiden vanhempien kokemukset saavat modernin kansantarun mittasuhteet. #yönlapsi #nightborn

I’m glad to see that so many other writers have been running into this exact problem, at least
A tumblr conversation.

but-the-library-of-alexandria:
the thing about writing fantasy stories is that language is so based on history that it can be hard to decide how far suspension of disbelief can carry you word-choice wise - what do you call a french braid in a world with no france? can a queen ann neckline be described if there was no queen ann? where do you draw the line? can you use the word platonic if plato never existed? can you name a character chris in a land without christianity? can you even say 'bungalow' in a world where there was no indian language for the word to originate from? is there a single word in any language that doesn't have a story behind it? to be accurate a fantasy story would be written in a fantasy language but who has the time for that

sebastian-bond:
Tolkien had the time apparently

misbehavingmaiar:
LIsten. Linguistics Georg, who invented over 10,000 conlangs each day, is an outlier and should not have been counted.

And they won’t tell you the rules (because they don’t actually exist) because they claim that if they do, you, an evil pervert, would deliberately try to skirt them or toe the line exactly——that’s if they deign to tell you what they didn’t like rather than just banning your game & calling you a pedo

i’ve been enjoying going through Artgames After Gamergate (2025) by Rob Gallagher for a lot of reasons that i hope i will elucidate in the near future. but something that caught my eye was bringing up my 2019 article claiming that pseudo-ironic dating sims aimed at dating sims that never existed.
Such games won praise from progressive critics for their defiance of generic expectations and their accommodation of a broader spectrum of bodies, identities, and desires than traditional dating sims. But some long-term fans of the genre were less impressed. [Chinese-Indonesian] blogger Kastel has argued that North American developers’ attempts to parody or critique dating sims were too often taking aim at an ‘imagined dating sims that has never existed’. For them, there was something condescending at best and ‘racist’ at worst about American developers simultaneously poking fun at and purporting to ‘solve’ a genre pioneered by Japanese developers. And if it was one thing for indie studios to riff on what American players imagined dating sims to be, it was quite another for brands to do the same as part of marketing stunts—as Kentucky Fried Chicken had done with I Love You, Colonel Sanders! A Finger Lickin’ Good Dating Simulator, which reimagines the mascot as a dishy bishonen (or ‘beautiful young man’).
