Apparently one last Tokyopop email has hit the internet, and this one's a doozy in sheer length and rambling. It starts off w/ Stu glossing over the company's history yet again while revealing he wanted to do a similar investment scheme in Japan in 2006.

WE ALMOST WENT PUBLIC 20 YEARS AGO IN JAPAN

Back during what I call TOKYOPOP 1.0, things happened very fast.
We were a young, small, rapidly growing startup.
We weren't a technology company - we were a content company - but we definitely had a tech company vibe.
Some of that certainly came from me.
I was a young coder before I ever became a creator or entrepreneur. As a middle school kid I had a RadioShack TRS-80 at home and taught myself BASIC, making silly graphics and text-only RPGs with my friends.
Years later in Japan, I launched an early online service called Japan Online, won an award for it and was even offered an opportunity to lead Microsoft Network Japan at the dawn of the Internet era.
I chose a different path.
Manga!
And in 2002, when we launched what we called AUTHENTIC MANGA, our little company suddenly took off like a rocket ship.
Waldenbooks caught on. Then Borders. Then Barnes & Noble.
Manga sections exploded.
TOKYOPOP blazed the trail for an entirely new category of publishing in America.

We got attention from the media.
From Hollywood.
From Japan.
And eventually from Wall Street...

TOKYOPOP'S FIRST SHOT AT GOING PUBLIC

While we were hot, Warner Bros. and DC Comics made an offer to acquire TOKYOPOP.
But our primary financial backer was SBI, one of Japan's leading venture investors - and still Tokyopop's second-largest shareholder today.
So, we signed Daiwa Securities as our lead banker and started preparing to take TOKYOPOP public in Japan.
But it was incredibly difficult.
Our business operated primarily in America. Our documentation was in English. Our financial statements were prepared US GAAP.
Suddenly we were trying to translate enormous amounts of corporate documentation and prepare an American company for the Japanese public markets.

Remember, this was *long* before AI could translate a 200-page document in a few seconds!
We worked our butts off, but we didn't make it in time.
The market window closed.
And the world changed almost overnight.

AND THEN THINGS GOT REALLY HARD

Manga piracy exploded.
Compeition intensified into what I used to call the manga "arms race."
The global financial crisis hit.
Borders - one of the companies that helped build the American manga market - went bankrupt.
And TOKYOPOP nearly went down with it.
We had a massive layoff and ultimately shut down our US publishing operation.
It was the toughest period of my life.
I've certainly learned something about entrepreneurship over nearly 30 years:
You're constantly fighting for your vision through a roller coaster of ups and downs.

And that's especially true in creative businesses.
Nobody knows where the next massive franchise will come from.
Nobody knows with certainty which story will connect with millions of people and which one won't.
You can study the market.
Look at the data.
Work with incredibly talented people.
Make the smartest decisions you know how to make.
And sometimes you'll still be wrong.
Other times, something you believe in that everyone else thinks is crazy turns into something huge.
That's the business we're in.
Our job is to keep swinging.
Learn from the misses.
Build on the hits.
And keep searching for that next creator, story, or idea that fans will fall in love with.

THEN SOMETHING HAPPENED THAT CHANGED MY PERSPECTIVE.

Now that the anime season is done, I'm finally watching L-Gaim again. On Episode 2 rn and during a chase sequence I was like "this is some flashy storyboarding for a Tomino show, I wonder..." Of course, the episode was storyboarded & directed by Yasuhiro Imagawa.

So the Tokyopop webinar is a total wash. It's a total repeat of their previous one that's just promoting all their new IP deals and their upcoming Kickstarter but glossing over...pretty much everything else. Plus there were either no questions or they were so heavily moderated it didn't matter.

So this is supposed to be the DNA of the witch, right. Guess how delighted I was to find that the sequences (or the few I tested anyway, I'm not typing all that shit out) blasted as the mitochondrial DNA for the common carp!!! Fish!!! like the witch!!!!

I have to share my sayolara nerding with the world. I got to this part in episode 9, and got jumpscared by ncbi BLAST, a tool for comparing DNA, RNA and protein sequences to a massive database. So ofc I had to go onto the real blast and check out a couple of these sequences to see what they were
