Analytically it is good to understand Israeli nationalism is like other (especially other settler-colonial/apartheid) nationalisms, but it is also important to understand that said nationalism becomes more untenable when the state commits genocide

Angela Davis describing Frederick Douglass’ role in the first American Women’s Rights convention passing a pro-suffrage resolution
EARLY WOMEN'S RIGHTS CAMPAIGN 51 refuted. If intelligence is the only true and rational basis of govern- ment, it follows that that is the best government which draws its life and power from the largest sources of wisdom, energy and goodness at its command. 15 Among the approximately three hundred women and men at- tending the Seneca Falls Convention, the issue of electoral power for women was the only major point of contention: the suffrage resolution alone was not unanimously endorsed. That the contro- versial proposal was presented at all, however, was due to Freder- ick Douglass' willingness to second Stanton's motion and to employ his oratorical abilities in defense of women's right to vote. 16 During those early days when women's rights was not yet a legitimate cause, when woman suffrage was unfamiliar and un- popular as a demand, Frederick Douglass publicly agitated for the political equality of women. In the immediate aftermath of the Seneca Falls Convention, he published an editorial in his newspa- per, the North Star. Entitled "The Rights of Women," its con- tent was quite radical for the times: In respect to political rights, we hold woman to be justly entitled to all we claim for men. We go further, and express our conviction that all political rights which it is expedient for men to exercise, it is equally so for woman. All that distinguishes man as an intelligent and accountable being, is equally true of woman, and if that govern- ment only is just which governs by the free consent of the governed, there can be no reason in the world for denying to woman the exercise of the elective franchise, or a hand in making and adminis-

Amazing
In the week after the June 24 primary election for mayor, I was determined to meet with voters in conservative neighborhoods where
Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani (D-Astoria), a democratic socialist, had performed surprisingly well. In a Howard Beach precinct where Mamdani won, I met a couple who, despite being conservative, voted for Mamdani because they bizarrely thought he had run "to the right" of former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and also believed he was Italian-American, as his name ended in an
"'" and he was from Astoria.
When I dug further into why they thought he was running "to the right" of Cuomo, they noted that it was because he discussed "prices" and
"cost of living," as Donald Trump had in 2024.
They both voted for Trump. They had a hard time believing Mamdani was a socialist because they believed socialists "support making everything more expensive. 1"

A final thing to consider is how Nathan Cofnas views Academic Freedom in his own words. Cofnas clearly supports purging the academy of his ideology enemies or think academic freedom matters. “From our perspective, there is no path to success that doesn't involve removing the activist non-scholars”
Action 2: Change the Population of Decision Makers on Campus
In the last twenty to thirty years, huge numbers of leftist activists have been hired as professors.
Many of these people have nothing to contribute to scholarship and are only here to push their ideological agenda. The activists are now so numerous that it has become almost impossible to be hired by a university without their approval. If they are allowed to control graduate admissions and faculty hiring for another generation, it is game over. From our perspective, there is no path to success that doesn't involve removing the activist non-scholars from these decision-making processes. There are two ways to reduce the power of the wokesters on campus: remove them by showing that they don't satisfy minimal criteria for contract renewal or academic promotion, or dilute their influence by bringing in some of the non-woke scholars who have been pushed out of academia for political reasons.
Regarding the first option, critics may say that removing, or taking any other action against, the pseudoscholars would violate "academic freedom." But academic freedom doesn't mean that taxpayers have a moral obligation to (directly or indirectly) finance lifelong sinecures for political activists, many of whom were hired by illegal procedures where straight white men or non-leftists were disqualified in advance.
Realistically, however, it will be very difficult to get rid of people who have already been hired and even given tenure.

Call me crazy, but I think dialectics kind of provides the answer to the liberal question of “you break X rule, aren’t you worried they’ll break that rule disadvantageously to you in response?” The key is to think about what change looks like. …

Beginning my research seminar, as always, with Lynn Hunt's essay How Writing Leads to Thinking (and Not the Other Way Around). Should be mandatory reading in light of the impact of AI. www.historians.org/perspectives...
Writing is stressful. Sitting in my computer chair my neck and shoulder muscles almost immediately tense up as I dig around in my brain for the best phrase or even any coherent string of words, whether I am writing an essay like this one, a book chapter, a letter of recommendation, or an email message to a friend. Writing is time-consuming. It’s a great way to pass the time on a long airplane flight because you lose track of the passage of time altogether. It’s even better, from that point of view exclusively, than watching an episode of Mad Men on your laptop. Writing means many different things to me but one thing it is not: writing is not the transcription of thoughts already consciously present in my mind. Writing is a magical and mysterious process that makes it possible to think differently.
