There aren't many days when you can kayak off Start Point, renowned for one of Britain's most dangerous tidal races. But yesterday the stars aligned, so I bunked off work. Delighted to see Rupert Kirkwood (the Lone Kayaker) out there. He took this picture of me +1. Before you ask: yes, it's real. 🧵

The Netherlands is investigating what a slowdown might mean for its sea defenses. Finland is examining the potential consequences. The United Kingdom is spending millions on an early-warning system. And Nordic ministers have begun discussing the threat.

But as research on the likelihood of a major slowdown or — less likely — a total collapse mounts, governments are beginning to take it seriously and trying to work out how to minimize the damage. Iceland has declared an AMOC collapse a national security risk.

The continent could face glacial winters and dry summers, surging sea levels and ferocious windstorms. Until recently, this prospect was considered remote: A nightmare scenario trotted out to warn of the catastrophic dangers of unchecked climate change.

us sooner than previously thought. While this process would unfold over many decades, a severe slowdown or collapse of the AMOC would disrupt Europe’s agriculture, infrastructure, welfare & economy on a scale that would make this past summer’s heat and fires look like mild memories of calmer time.

A colder-than-usual patch of water just south of #Greenland, nicknamed the “cold blob,” has some scientists worried this slowdown is already well underway. Other researchers have examined climate models, surveyed sea temperature records and ran simulations to conclude that the ocean could turn on

Jacob Öberg @profjacob.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
In the depths of the North Atlantic, a vast system of swirling currents known as the AMOC, carries warm tropical waters north, preventing Europe from freezing. But as humans continue pumping planet-warming gases into the atmosphere, this oceanic heat pump will weaken. It might even fizzle out.

As long as the Tories are threatening to leave the ECHR, they aren’t a serious party. Consider it the ultimate red flag. Any party who’d take this entirely unnecessary and ruinous risk with our rights and our country’s security and wellbeing should never get its hands on power. (Letter, Times)
Value of the
ECHR
Sir, In dangerous times, serious countries do not retreat into splendid isolation. They build alliances, multiply their influence and strengthen institutions. Key among those is the 46-member Council of Europe, at its heart the European Convention on Human Rights. As former independent reviewers of terrorism legislation we have seen at close quarters that the ECHR is not just a human rights instrument. It is a national security asset. Terrorist networks, hostile states, organised crime gangs and people smugglers do not respect borders. Tackling them requires arrangements for the closest possible co-operation with our neighbours, including through joint investigations and police access to European passenger, fingerprint, DNA and vehicle data. These arrangements expressly depend on internationally agreed human rights standards, applied by a supranational court. We detect no political willingness to excuse the UK from compliance with standards to which the rest of Europe already subscribes. As authoritarian powers grow more aggressive and democratic institutions face mounting pressure, Britain should not be abandoning one of its greatest postwar achievements.
The question is not whether we can afford to remain within the ECHR. It is whether, in an increasingly perilous world, we can afford not to.
