#Conlangity Day 8 This is gonna be a sort of loose topic day - do what you want with it! Today is about compound words & other affixes. Can you combine words in your conlang? Do you have any examples? What kind of prefixes/suffixes exist, & how are they used? More to consider in the thread! 🧵👇️
Daily prompt for the #Conlangity worldbuilding game:

DAY 8
[GRAMMAR/VOCAB] Let's talk about NOUNS - i.e. people, creatures, places, objects & concepts.
Do you have "compound nouns" in your conlang - e.g. streetlight, ice cube, wallpaper? What about prefixes & suffixes that alter meaning - e.g. "EX-wife, singER"
Try to come up with a few examples!

Light yellow text printed in two columns over an orange background showing a faint photo of a large open dictionary. Hosted by @professoremily.bsky.social
Additional card with “HELPFUL TIPS,” light yellow text over the same background as the main prompt.

Think about the rules of word compounds in your conlang:
- Is it usually just 2 words, or can it be more than that? Would the base word come first or last?
- Some languages can create almost unlimited compound words (e.g. German), and some can make whole long “sentence words” (e.g. Kalaallisut). Is your conlang that type of language?
-------------------
Prefix/suffix ideas:
- Showing chronological order (e.g. “pre-” & “post-”)
- Showing support or opposition (“anti-” & “pro-”)
- Showing a state of being (“sadness” or “brotherhood”)

For Noah, he's a really straightforward, imaginative, kind of impatient kid, so in his first person voice I tend to go for shorter, more jagged sentences with a choppy rhythm but still a sense of creativity & poetry in the words.
“I opened a window.”
Kazuo wasn’t an easy kid to impress. He always bore himself with an air of smug indifference, as if he was too clever to really be affected by anything. But when I spoke those four weighty words, I saw his eyes widen in the dim light. He stared at me as if he couldn’t decide whether I was a hero, a madman, a monster, or all three.
At last he simply asked, “What’d you see?”
But I couldn’t answer. I realized there was no way for me to to capture in words the vastness of that horrible, empty anti-place, or the feeling of smallness I’d gotten while looking at it, or the crushing dread of seeing with my own eyes that the world really did end where the Tenement ended. And I couldn’t explain, not even to myself, why even after seeing it, there was still a small, stubborn voice deep down inside me screaming that this couldn’t be all there was. There had to be more. But where was it?
Finally I just said, “Nothing.”
“Nothing?”
“Yeah, nothing. There’s nothing outside the Tenement.”

#LitHodgepodge 7 Ok Pam I'm gonna copy you and post 2 snips 😂 The first is from #GodsOfAtalantis Book 2, close 3rd person/Mireia's POV. Second is Noah's 1st person POV from #Tenement. When I really lock in to Mimi, I feel like I go for a strong flowy rhythm that's a little unpredictable.🧵
She’d never felt so small.
She’d never felt so fragile.
She’d never felt so—desperate.
Kena.
Desperate to reach out and touch a hand in the darkness, and find reassurance that she wasn’t alone here after all. Desperate to feel that something still meant something, that life still had something supporting it. Desperate to do something—to do everything—before she lost her chance and it was all ripped away from her forever.
Kena.
It was all so absurdly fragile—all of it. She saw that now. She’d had a glimpse of it before when her father died, but the truth of it hadn’t really flattened her back then the way it was doing now.
It had all always been fragile. Yet what had she been doing all this time? Playing silly games, procrastinating, telling herself “soon” or “maybe tomorrow.” Letting her fears and foolish pride stop her. Assuring herself that there was no need to act now because it was all inevitable anyway. Debating with herself over pointless philosophical questions about fate and free will when it didn’t really matter, did it? The only thing that mattered was that it was all going to end, one way or another, maybe sooner, maybe later. The only thing that mattered was reaching out into that abyss and finding a hand to grasp so that you knew you weren’t really alone.
Kena.

Other sentences may not need an object because they have LINKING VERBS, which are verbs that describe a state of being instead of an action. In these sentences, instead of an object you get a predicate nominative (a noun that renames the subject) or a predicate adjective (describing the subject).
A BIT MORE TO THINK ABOUT...

INDIRECT OBJECTS
If there’s someone/something in the sentence that isn’t being directly acted on by the verb, but is still receiving the action indirectly, we call that an “indirect” object.

Jack gave Cassie a donut.
[Text box pointing to Cassie:] indirect object (getting the gift)
[Text box pointing to donut:] direct object (being given)

PREDICATE NOMINATIVES/ADJECTIVES
In some sentences, there’s no object, but instead a noun or adjective that renames/describes the subject.

Jack is a baker (nominative)
Jack is cool (adjective)

Not every sentence needs an object, because some verbs are *intransitive* - meaning they don't happen TO anything; they just happen. Meanwhile *transitive* verbs TRANSfer the action to an object. This distinction will be important to remember later when we get into noun cases & verb modifications!
A BIT MORE TO THINK ABOUT...
Not every sentence has an object, and some have multiple objects, or even indirect objects.
-----------------
TRANSITIVE & INTRANSITIVE VERBS:
If a verb has an object, we call that a “transitive” verb. You can remember it like “it transfers its action to something.”
Jack ate the donut.
If a verb has no object, it’s “intransitive.” It doesn’t happen to anything; it just happens.
Jack sneezed.

#Conlangity Day 7 GRAMMAR TIME! 🥳😂 What's the usual order of words in a sentence? In English, it goes Subject/Verb/Object, but many languages use a different order! How does your language do it? Do descriptors (adj/adv) go before or after? For more info about sentence structure, read the 🧵👇️!
Daily prompt for the #Conlangity worldbuilding game:

DAY 7
[GRAMMAR] When forming a sentence in your conlang, what's the typical word order?
For example, is it [Subject][Verb][Object], or [Verb][Subject][Object]? Another variation?
Do descriptors like adjectives usually come before or after the words they describe?

Light yellow text printed in two columns over an orange background showing a faint photo of a large open dictionary. Hosted by @professoremily.bsky.social.
Additional card with “HELPFUL TIPS,” light yellow text over the same background as the main prompt.

In grammar, the SUBJECT is the thing the sentence is about, the VERB is the action, and the OBJECT is the noun the action is happening to.

[Sub][Verb][Obj]
Steve pets the cat.

That's how we say it in English, but maybe in your conlang it might go:

[Verb][Obj][Sub]
Pets the cat Steve.
---------------
In English, adjectives usually come before the nouns they describe:

The orange cat

But in some languages, the adjective often comes after the noun:

El gato naranja

So think about mixing it up!

#LitHodgepodge 6 My queen Icozoue plays the archetypal role of the Mentor for Mireia & Kena in #GodsOfAtalantis. She's there to train them to become gods & push them in plot-directions when needed, & also offer emotional support (esp in the later books). She's also a grouchy alcoholic with RBF 😅
Digital drawing by me of Icozoue, a middle aged woman with viking style braids and a stylized wolf tattoo across the left side of her face. She wears black robes, is holding a goblet of wine, and has resting bitch face. A small crystal hangs around her neck. She is Shadow Mommy.
Cropped colored drawing of Icozoue by me showing just her head & shoulders. She's rolling her eyes and scowling like she's done with everyone's shit. Off to the side she has a little thought bubble with just a skull in it - either wishing for the sweet release of death or contemplating murdering a couple of teenage godlings.

#Conlangity Day 6 Time to make some vocab! Or share, if you've already got something! How do people greet each other/say goodbye in your language? Are there different customs depending on the time & place, the familiarity or identity of the speakers, etc? (Do your best with the grammar!)
Daily prompt for the #Conlangity worldbuilding game:

DAY 6
CREATE SOME VOCAB! How do people in your conlang say hello and goodbye? Are there variations depending on the context, or who is being addressed?

#Conlangity 5 We're taking a step back from the details of your conlang today to look at the big picture. What's the origin of this language? How did it evolve? What purpose did it serve? This is important to think about, because it should inform things like grammar rules & word etymology!
Daily prompt for the #Conlangity worldbuilding game:

DAY 5
[CULTURE] How did your language develop? Did it form in isolation, or through migration or colonization? What purpose did/does it serve? Is it a creole, a common tongue for trading, a language of scholars or elites, a peasant vernacular?

#Conlangity Day 4 This is our last day dealing with the sound of your language! So let's talk about pronunciation. Which syllables get stressed & when? Does it change the meaning? Is your language a tonal language? Do letters ever change based on other sounds near them or their place in a word?
Daily prompt for the #Conlangity worldbuilding game:

DAY 4
[SOUNDS] Lay down some general rules of pronunciation. Think about things like:
- Emphasis: where is the stress usually placed in words?
- Changing sounds: do any letters change depending on context?
- Tone: does the tone change the meaning?
- Exceptions: are there times the rules break?

Light yellow text printed in two columns over an orange background showing a faint photo of a large open dictionary. Hosted by @professoremily.bsky.social.
Additional card with “HELPFUL TIPS,” light yellow text over the same background as the main prompt.

STRESS
The stress of a word can change its meaning - for instance, in English some words put stress on the 1st syllable when it's a noun, and on the 2nd syllable when it's a verb.
"Our schedules conFLICT" = verb
"He has a CONflict" = noun
"We need to proGRESS" = verb
"We've made PROGress" = noun
-------------
TONE
In many languages, such as Vietnamese, Chinese, Yoruba and Navajo, the TONE changes the entire dictionary definition of a word. Consider making your conlang a tonal language!

#LitHodgepodge 3 My goober bbs Mireia & Kena from #GodsOfAtalantis ❤️ Mimi's already good at swimming, & Kena has a few hobbies (gardening, writing, flute-playing). So what else might they be good at?
Colored digital sketch by me of Mireia & Kena, the MCs of my Atlantis trilogy, grinning mischievously at each other like they're sharing an inside joke. Mireia is a young woman with light brown skin and long dark brown wavy hair, gray eyes, and wears a blue top that clasps at her left shoulder. Kena is a young man with light brown skin, dark brown curly hair, amber eyes, freckles, and a red phoenix tattoo across his left shoulder and chest; he wears an gold/orange top clasped at his right shoulder and a gold necklace with rays like the sun.

#Conlangity Day 3 Congratulations, you survived Phonemes Day! But we're still not done establishing the basic flavor of your conlang. Today, tell me which sounds (consonants, vowels, phoneme combos) are rare or never used in this language, or would be hard for native speakers to pronounce.
Daily prompt for the #Conlangity worldbuilding game:

DAY 3

Don't just think about letters, but sounds. For example, "a" in English makes many different sounds - apple, father, away.
Also, consider sounds that English uses multiple letters for: "sh," "ch," or "th," for example.

This is one of my favorite Kena scenes. I haven't posted it in a while, and I was just thinking about it, so here ya go 😂 From GODS OF ATALANTIS Book 3. Sunshine Boys are hot 😎 Book 1 now available in paperback! bookshop.org/p/books/the-...
Kena dodged the attack, moving like lightning, and landed a hit on the side of Toctha’s head that sent him stumbling sideways. Mireia, who had of course trained right alongside Kena and knew his fighting capabilities inside and out, was well aware that he could have knocked Toctha unconscious in an instant if he’d chosen to. She also knew that if Toctha had any idea that Kena was deliberately holding back, he would have been even more furious.
Shaking his head, Toctha turned back to Kena and resumed an aggressive fighting stance, bracing to attack again.
“Really? You’re that determined to fight?” Kena sighed, slipping into an almost lazy defensive stance. “I was hoping that blow might have discouraged you.”
“A lucky hit!” Toctha growled, shaking his head and blinking again, still clearly a bit disoriented. “I’ll have you know I was trained by Master Jakuufet himself!”
“Who?” asked Kena.
“Of the Adza Muul Fraternity,” Mireia explained, wondering how she’d managed to remember such a useless fact.
“Adza Muul?” Kena made a face. “Well, that explains a lot.”
Seeing that Kena was distracted, Toctha attempted to charge at him again. But Kena only dodged him once more, easily evading his wide swing and catching him from underneath. An instant later Toctha was on his back in the dirt, panting and groaning and wondering what on earth had just happened.
“You left yourself open, friend,” Kena said, helpfully. “I understand, it’s easy to do. You wouldn’t believe how many times that’s happened to me.”

#PretendPanel Sept 26th Goodbye, September! Earlier this month, I finally debuted the print version of my YA fantasy novel THE GODS OF ATALANTIS (part 1). Buy it here! bookshop.org/p/books/the-... I'm so proud of this stupid thing, I still can't believe it exists. Now... to finish parts 2 and 3! 😅
Cover of THE GODS OF ATALANTIS, designed by me. The bottom half shows a girl with long flowing hair sleeping in a fetal position, wrapped up in flowing cloths; she is painted in shades of light to dark blue, and her flowing hair and cloths are reminiscent of ocean waves. At the top, upside down, a boy with curly hair and a tattoo on his arm is also sleeping in a fetal position, wrapped up in cloths; he is painted in golds and reds, like the sun. The two of them mirror each other almost like yin & yang, with the title written between them in shining reddish-gold letters. A reddish-gold border frames the cover, and each corner features a small symbol: a marigold flower, a phoenix, an orange & blue striped fish, and a wolf. Along the left and right sides of the border, pale bluish-white crystals are growing. Along the bottom the author's name EMILY KLOTZ is written in the same reddish-gold letters.

#Septopolis 14 So I'm still a little fuzzy on clothes, though my idea for Terra Tenebrae in general is "Mad Max vibes" (see my girl Serena here). In Capria specifically, I think they'd be famous for being extra over-the-top in their self-expression & exhibitionism. bsky.app/profile/khon...

#AwesomeCharacters #GodsOfAtalantis: Definitely Kena! He's very nurturing to both plants & animals. Sadly his kindness toward animals in the past caused him some pain, because his family treated it as a sign of weakness. But that didn't change Kena ❤️ He even gets a pet phoenix after saving her 🧵
Two drawings by me of Kena with his pet phoenix Aiaxi.
On the left: young Kena (13yo), a bit with light brown skin, dark brown curly hair & a phoenix tattoo on his left shoulder and chest, wearing a yellow/red skirt, kneels in a green garden & holds out his hand to baby Aiaxi, a tiny little chick with fluffy dark red & grayish-purple feathers, resting on a pile of leaves.
On the right: older Kena (17yo) stands with a serious face holding up Aiaxi on his right arm. Aiaxi is full grown, about the size of a goose with a long flowing tail & outstretched wings; her feathers are golden and red like fire.

#MythAugust 30 You've been chatting about your fictional gods & religions all month, but how much do these things play a role in the story you're trying to tell? Is it just cool worldbuilding flavor, or is it essential to the plot & characters? Maybe all of the above?
#MythAugust prompt for Aug 30:
What role does the mythology play in your story? Is it crucial to your plot/characters, or just a cool background detail?

#MythAugust 28 Today's question is about how the gods/spirits influence the lives of regular people - specifically, in mundane everyday kind of ways. Think of little things like idioms & swear words, clothing & accessories, small superstitious rituals, or locations everyone knows to avoid...

#SumLuv From #GodsOfAtalantis Book 2 😊❤️
And he wanted—he wanted so badly—to finally tell her that he didn’t actually care about fate or free will or any of that, and honestly he never had. None of it mattered. What mattered was that the two of them were each other’s match, each the answer to the lonely call of the other’s heart, and that was simply a fact. And maybe “fate” was neither some lovely empty word, nor some vague tyrannical force to be defied, but rather just a natural truth: stars belonged in the sky, fish belonged in the sea, and Kena belonged with Mireia.
