Great read. Too bad that the measuring the rates of product saying no to things is more likely to get us fired than rewarded.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a kid stands in front of his science fair presentation on a three-sided cardboard display. The display reads: When I grow up, I want to be… THE LARGEST SEA CREATURE. Panel 2: the kid, now matured, is walking into the ocean confidently. He’s turned back toward the shore, smiling and waving at his parents who are standing a few meters behind him, right where the water meets the shore. They’re waving back to him. Panel 3: from a bird’s eye view the kid can be seen under the surface of the water. He’s massive and only a portion of his face is in frame. His father, who appears older, is paddling alone in a canoe above his son’s submerged gigantic face.

Do you know what it would take to cancel your current project? I’m willing to bet that for many the answer will be no. This is why so much time and money is wasted in busines. We search for the evidence that proves we were right, without even knowing what would tell us it was wrong.

Good engineering leadership is so important. Middle management makes a massive difference in how this gets implemented too. It's fascinating how much leads/ managers can make or break even the best of intentions.

It's a really good sign when they demand more from product, in a constructive and realistic way. Conversations are more around systemic ways to improve team performance, and cross-team sharing over pure output metrics. Even if they lack the foundations today, you know they'll build them.

alright friends and computationists, what are the signals you pick up on that make you think a team has high engineering discipline? (whatever "high" means to you) i'm not talking science or evidence. i'm talking casual conversation, heuristics, no evidence whatsoever, just radar. what trips it?

What a guy
4 panel comic

Panel 1: a wizard in blue robe and white beard sitting with small forg at a desk behind the computer. “Click, click” is the sound of the mouse to be heard
Panel 2: close up on the computer screen. There’s a green check mark and a full loading bar on it. From off screen someone, probably the wizard, says “boom, there it is”.
Panel 3: forg is left behind alone at his desk. There’s an open door in the background. Forg says “thanks installation wizard” and a little pink heart appears, showing his affection.
Panel 4: we see now that the wizard has already left the house after a job well done. He replies to forg watching him go from his window: “it’s what I do”
