And as I am a broken record on all of this, I will say it again: none of this lives in isolation. I wrote a whole book 10(!!!!!!) years ago on college football and sexual assault because there are so many upsetting and repeating patterns. I’d love for the book to be irrelevant! Please!!!

The larger context here is that back in 2020, we reported at USA Today on major failures at LSU, including in athletics and especially with football, with how they handled reports of gendered violence. The school responded, said it would do better, made changes. www.usatoday.com/story/news/i...

The Cornell story is horrific, but I’d like to shine a light on what happened at LSU with a current football player on the team:

In July, the school found Shanklin responsible for "forcible rape" and issued a one-year suspension, which is a full ban from campus and activities, according to documents reviewed by ESPN. After Shanklin appealed, an administrative law judge who handles appeals per LSU policy upheld the finding that the athlete was responsible for "forcible rape," but reduced the punishment to four semesters of probation with no restrictions, which allows Shanklin to remain enrolled and on campus and to participate in activities as long as he stays out of trouble.

We've had the ability to watch, say, Counterstrike marathons, Street Fighter tournaments, or chess matches between computers since the 90s. Spectacles which, by their very definition, would be at a "higher standard" than human play. And nobody wants it. It's entirely meaningless. It has no appeal.
