A Richmond pedestrian was also killed this past week by a driver, though not hit-run.

Just this past week pedestrians have been killed or severely injured by hit-run drivers around the East Bay in Castro Valley, Oakland, Union City, and now Berkeley.

The difference in school districts isn’t anything new though, whereas the relative size increase vs decrease in home sales is. If it was just the school districts I would expect the disparity to be consistent.

For comparison here is the same 2024 990 data for the “all powerful bike lobby” that I work for, & which has become a popular target for conspiracy theories by some bikeway opponents in Berkeley. Please make it make sense.

Here’s the Bay Area Council earnings, assets, & chief officer compensation from their 2024 990, which is wild. Here’s hoping that the Libby Schaaf era of the org will be better than the Jim Wunderman era, but I’m not counting on it.

Oakland’s existing parking enforcement dispatch number is (510) 238-3099. But the response times vary a lot IME, & the enforcement hours/days are limited. I use it mostly to report OPD parked illegally around their HQ.

Sacramento also has a pilot project w bus-mounted cameras automatically ticketing bike lane violations. I asked AC Transit staff about this as they already have cameras for automated bus stop/lane tickets. They said they haven’t looked into it yet & are waiting for a report on their existing program

I’m always blown away when I hear someone going about the “non-profit industrial complex”, but it turns out they are referring to small homeless service orgs and not to actual corporate-serving mega-nonprofits like the Bay Area Council.

Shades of the Bay Area Council’s campaign against the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge trail which also involved 1000s of form emails from “community members”. How many of these were faked too? The Bay Conservation & Development Commission didn’t ask & violated their charter to approve the closure.

Meanwhile right across the border here in Emeryville rents are way up but home sales are still depressed, last I checked. It’s quite confusing.

The driver is definitely in the wrong regardless, but that parking garage is seismically unsound & has been closed for many years. A plan to replace it w affordable housing fell through, a study on an alternate plan is supposed to be published soon.

Also another larger pothole on the same street was filled, in response to another report I sent in at the same time. No 🍆 required, just boring use of existing civic engagement tools. Thank you to the city crews for following up!

To the person who has been drawing 🍆s around potholes in NW Oakland: Please be aware that the recent asphalt fills on 55th St were in response to the 311 reports I sent in, not to the 🍆s. If you want better results please send in reports. Marking up the potholes alone doesn’t do anything.

This very thoughtful memorial has been placed at the site of the crash. Hopefully this one will not only inspire a remembrance of the deceased, but also compel action to prevent future tragedies.

At this intersection, a community member was killed in a hit-and-run.
For all those we've lost needlessly and far too soon, let us remember.
In this world, there is much suffering. In this life, nothing is promised. All we have is each other. Let us act with care, compassion, and respect, in the hopes of somehow easing the pain we all share, and the suffering we all know.”

There’s zero mention in that post about how the size, speed, & shape of vehicles in the US impacts safety outcomes significantly, which regulators could address tomorrow if they cared to. Obsessing over an unknown future technology “fix” instead of simple physics & geometry is madness.

“campaign spending reforms” not “campaign spending is reforms”
020
Robert Prinz @prinzrob.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Some folks say they want legislators to legislate instead of banking on ballot measures. But they did that via AB5 which the voters then overturned w a carve out for gig driver companies via Prop 22. Sadly I think we need to keep fighting fire w fire, until we get campaign spending is reforms.
220
Robert Prinz @prinzrob.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
That’s an oversimplification, the under-cutting doesn’t only refer to fare amounts. Nobody is suggesting “abstaining from automobility”. But we do need a level playing field for public agencies, w long-term mobility goals prioritized above quarterly earnings statements.

Robert Prinz @prinzrob.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
But apparently this was too much to ask of giant gig driver & delivery companies who instead disobeyed & fought the law. Imagine what would happen if an individual stole $270M dollars. If corporations are people, then why can’t we send them to prison?

I previously managed a bike ed program for a small nonprofit w about 2 dozen part-time instructors. We already paid much more than min wage, but when CA’s labor laws changed in 2019 we still converted everyone from contractor to employee status despite the difficulty & expense.

Robert Prinz @prinzrob.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
If Lyft had been held to account all along wrt worker pay requirements, would they have been able to afford to bankroll Prop 22 the way they did? My guess is probably not. Their gamble paid off, but enabled by the state.
180
Robert Prinz @prinzrob.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Lyft spent $49M on Prop 22, to carve out a statewide labor rights exception for themselves. It was the most expensive CA ballot measure ever, but $49M was still only 18% of what Lyft has now owes via this settlement. They’ll pay no more since Prop 22 legalized their previous labor rights violations.
2132
Robert Prinz @prinzrob.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
This is great, though the settlement is a fraction of the harm done. During the pre-Prop 22 era gig driver companies underpriced rides via cheap labor & VC funding, to undercut public transit & get customers hooked. Allowing them to operate illegally contributed to our current transit crisis.

I believe & trust them on this need. But in the Downtown area w a street grid & small blocks it seems like a second truck should be able to quickly go around the block instead of passing.

Robert Prinz @prinzrob.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
OFD says their primary need is for one fire truck to be able to pass another fire truck with outriggers deployed when responding to a fire in a tall building that requires a ladder truck.

The amount Brin spent on the election is equivalent to the average CA household spending $500, as a percentage of their total accumulated wealth. I’m honestly surprised he isn’t spending more.

Okay thanks, I know that connector path. Unfortunately Concord just threw down sharrows a few years ago but no traffic calming on Mt Diablo St, which albeit short can get busy during peak hours. They still need real & continuous bike infrastructure here.

Robert Prinz @prinzrob.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
What streets do you use to get from the CoCo Canal Trail to Concord BART? There’s a proposed connector trail on Cowell, but all the existing routes I know of involve streets w minimal bike infrastructure or traffic calming.

Robert Prinz @prinzrob.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
The fire department mandated 26 feet clearance on this 42 foot wide street. So by removing all the car parking the 2-way cycletrack would have fit. But there would still be two massive 13 foot car lanes enabling deadly speeding.

Here’s the original 2-way cycletrack design vs the redesigned 1-way buffered bike lane, likely to start construction in early 2027. I can’t definitely say what could have prevented this crash, but the more significant traffic calming from the cycletrack version would make speeding much harder.
1301
Robert Prinz @prinzrob.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
This tragedy occurred at a location that has long been planned for traffic calming. Oakland DOT’s Lakeside/Lake Merritt Blvd project was to start construction around the same time as 14th St. But the fire dep’t took issue w the roadway clearance & forced a redesign, resulting in a 2 year delay.

WRT on-street connections to the IHT there are protected bikeways in development on Treat & Oak Park/Coggins to PH BART, and a 580 under crossing path at Dublin/Pleasanton BART. But no complete connections in the works yet to WC or Concord BART.

There is an access path from the Iron Horse Trail to the Sports Basement store in San Ramon, but it’s semi-unofficial. Another group is interested in one to a shopping center & bike shop in Alamo, but the right of way is very complicated. First East Bay Parks, then EBMUD, then the private landowner.

Robert Prinz @prinzrob.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
The trails are great. But the central Contra Costa jurisdictions they run through need to expand their low stress bikeway network WELL beyond those trails, as they are currently very over-reliant on them.
