Center left housing supporters have been able to convert dozens of formerly soft or hard NIMBYs into being YIMBYs - Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Senator Jesse Arreguin are prominent examples of this. I have yet to see much on the other side of the ledger.

Climate action in DC could mean moving more people into the low-carbon communities we've already created, along the transit lines we've already built.

Suppose we grant the premise, for argument's sake. If you're worried about poorly behaved cyclists interfering with motorists and pedestrians, you should WANT them in their own lane, out of the way of cars and off the sidewalks

I would submit that there is no place in the DMV that has changed as much as College Park and the Route 1 corridor in the past 20 years, more than even DC or Arlington

Fantastic read. I kid you not: the confused nature of Colesville Road (and Georgia Avenue too!) is a major contributor to why I left Silver Spring. It’s somehow dangerous and inefficient no matter what mode of transportation you prefer.

on one hand there is serious glonzoification going on with data centers that isn’t helpful/could have further NIMBY repercussions but more importantly on the other hand it is INSANE that so many jurisdictions give data centers by right permitting but would never do that for multifamily housing

The real lesson is once you open the free money spigot to one rich owner, the rest will flock like moths to a flame for their cut. And when you've already spouted economically debunked nonsense to justify the first, you have no factual ground to stand on anymore to say no

There is no compelling urban planning reason to concentrate apartment buildings on loud, polluted, dangerous main streets. This is solely a political strategy by planners trying to avoid NIMBY backlash to proposed apartments. This political strategy DOES NOT WORK. Homeowners oppose housing anyway!

Seattle NIMBYs exploiting data center hysteria to drum up opposition to the city’s housing growth plan. I expect to see a lot more of this in every city.
A screenshot from the quoted article that reads, “Tree Action Seattle, a group that has turned out supporters to growth plan hearings over the past few years with a goal of retaining Seattle's urban tree canopy, recently framed the changes as potentially opening the door to more data centers in the city, despite the city council recently adopting a full one-year moratorium on large data centers. Sandy Shettler, one of Tree Action Seattle's most prominent representatives, downplayed the number of appeals that get filed in comments to councilmembers Wednesday.”

Our work in Maryland is far from over, and we're thankful we have so many champions helping to carry it out. @joleneivey.bsky.social @goldberginmd.bsky.social @judashman.bsky.social @cmkatestewart.bsky.social @natalifg.bsky.social @dawnluedtke.bsky.social
GGWash congratulates our endorsed candidates on their victories in the 2026 Maryland Democratic primaries. In Prince George's County, we celebrate Jolene Ivey, Sydney Harrison, Eric Olson, and Tamara Davis Brown; in Montgomery County, we stand with Scott Goldberg, Laurie-Anne Sayles, Jud Ashman, Kate Stewart, Natali Fani-Gonzalez, and Dawn Luedtke. All will serve with distinction on their respective county councils. We are also proud to have endorsed Karla Silvestre, whose race is currently too close to call.

Maryland Democratic voters statewide sent a clear message: they want affordable housing, reliable transit, and safer streets. We are eager to partner with all elected officials to make those priorities a reality.

I think there's actually a useful difference we can draw here. Namely: there is incrementalism that comes from pushing wherever possible (and with whatever levels possible) to make progress toward a maximalist demand, versus incrementalism that's positioned as an excuse for setting minor goals

Speaking at the DC local level: the "moderates" need to give voters a reason to vote for them. McDuffie couldn't do that; JLG could. McDuffie didn't even know what he stood for; of course the voters couldn't know either. If "moderates" want to win, they need to convince - not blame - the voters.

There is a certain kind of environmental advocate for whom you can barely scratch their surface and find a very classist eugenicist. Urban dwellers and the disadvantaged are non-entities in their plans. We should be *encouraging* more cities, the per-person impact is dramatically reduced.

With much at stake in Montgomery County, the choice is clear. Andrew Friedson has what it takes to “guard it well” as County Executive. No other candidate has articulated as bold or as coherent a vision for making Montgomery County a better place to live. He’s earned your vote. 7/8

Friedson’s convictions are all the more laudable as District 1 councilmember, representing wealthy enclaves in Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and Potomac that uphold the exclusionary, costly status quo. He’s done what’s right even when the loudest opposition comes from his district. 6/8

Friedson has removed red tape from market rate housing production, like spearheading office-to-housing conversions and streamlining the permitting process. As chair of the Planning, Housing and Parks committee, he stood firm on making the county more abundant and affordable. 5/8

Friedson was instrumental in establishing the county’s $50m Housing Production Fund in 2021, now a national best practice for building social housing. Hundreds of working families have been able to put down roots in Montgomery County because of homes the HPF built. 4/8

While some county executive candidates want to continue Elrich’s disastrous policies, Andrew Friedson offers an alternative: grow the economy so everyone benefits. His time in the County Council shows that he won’t change course when it’s politically convenient. 3/8

Montgomery County is at a crossroads. Federal layoffs and a housing affordability crisis (worsened by current County Executive Marc Elrich) are squeezing the middle class. We have two paths forward: continue raising taxes, or encourage growth. 2/8
