"They" are human beings. As Jews, we know all too well where government propaganda like this leads. This is white supremacist extremism that inevitably fuels violence.

Kids should be learning that AI output isn’t trustworthy, where it really comes from, and how it’s disrupting our ability to tell what’s real. They shouldn’t be learning that AI will make them more efficient or do their work for them because it can’t. That would be propaganda, not education

(This may sound INCREDIBLY strange to modern sensibilities, but in a lot of premodern societies it was common to breastfeed kids until they were, like, 4-5 years old, at least partially to intentionally constrain birthrates, but also because of lack of good "baby foods")

Having kids 1-2 years apart was almost unheard of in premodernity (except for very rich people who often had wet nurses to breastfeed instead - people were aware that breastfeeding delays the return of ovulation) and is only possible now thanks to modern diets and early weaning of toddlers

Oh, also, women in premodern societies got pregnant less often than you think There's a recovery period after giving birth before ovulation starts again, and the length depends on nutrition and how long you breastfeed, so most women would be incapable of getting pregnant for 3-5 years after

Also worth noting that men being favored for roles that require mobility is part of why nomadic pastoralist societies tend to be intensely patriarchal (that, and they have strong incentive to control reproduction, as above) Patriarchy is pretty strongly associated with pastoralism

An amusing implication here is that you can make a fantasy world a lot less patriarchal than our own history by, uh, simply introducing effective contraception, lol That's a much easier way of preventing births society considers "illegitimate"

Knowing this, it becomes clear: the strict gendered division of labor actually flows from Patriarchy, rather than the other way around. As women become constrained in order to exert tight control over reproduction, the roles women are allowed to occupy become restricted.

But, as control over reproduction becomes more central to a society's goals - preventing illegitimate births, establishing alliances through marriage, etc. - women are typically more constrained Societies with stronger incentives to exert control over reproduction are usually more patriarchal.

It is not the ONLY way to control reproductive habits (as evinced by the fact that not all societies that have strong gender roles are strictly patriarchal), but it's the most common. Hunter-gatherers usually aren't very patriarchal, because they have little incentive to exert this control

So, if gendered division of labor was generally much weaker in premodernity than most people believe, from whence does Patriarchy flow? The answer: control of reproduction. The most effective way to control and order a society's reproductive habits is, generally, to control women, specifically.

We see a much more pervasive gendered division of labor in agricultural and pastoralist societies - for example, in agriculturalist societies, men tend to harvest the crops while women process them However, once again, this is not a strict division - there is a lot of overlap!

Across societies, generally, we see this pattern in gendered division of labor, insofar as they possess one: the difference is not based on men being *stronger* so much as it is on *pregnant/breastfeeding* women being less mobile, meaning "feminine" roles are usually those that require less movement

Women who are not pregnant (and are not breastfeeding), however, frequently participate in "masculine" activities, such as long-distance hunting trips. This means it's debatable the extent to which gendered division of labor even *exists at all* in most hunter-gatherer societies.

Insofar as gendered division of labor usually even exists in hunter-gatherer societies, it is not divided based on hunting vs. gathering (all genders do both), but instead on *distance* - pregnant women have more difficulty moving around, so men tend to dominate roles that require lots of movement

To start with, we have to address the "men hunt, women gather" myth. This is not backed up by empirical evidence - women hunters are common in ~80% of hunter-gatherer societies, and evidence indicates this is true throughout the archaeological record. www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-...

The dismissal of anarchism as “utopian” shows how propagandized we are to not think beyond the assigned boundaries for our imagination. There are anarchistic societies that existed and exist. They aren’t utopias. Also, capitalism sells its own utopia. What was Thatcher on about if not that.

When it comes to the level of selection, our discoveries in molecular genetics have thrown a wrench in the idea that evolution even COULD act on individual genes; they're not actually inherited independently, as chromosomes don't "shuffle" their genes perfectly during meiosis!
