would love to see a thread of small practical pieces of advice developers just starting out or unfamiliar with a genre might not know! I’ll start: if you’re using a tag-based system, don’t just give everything an individual tag—look for thematic groups where similar events can lead to same outcome

Ok this was kind of a wild game, and an unexpected collaboration between Firaxis and EA. Basically you built golf courses for little computer people, and they walked around, played, and judged your designs. It was great. :)

Ok, here's a new year's idea for 2025: I should do weekly posts on awesome game AI papers. There's _so much_ interesting game AI work that has been flying under the radar, going back decades. And basically all of it is light years away from the "generative AI" stuff taking over the zeitgeist.

Oh this is *delightful*, especially if you remember the Pentium bug fiasco. This op-ed has it all: 90s cyberspace mysticism, fin-de-siècle jitters about trusting technology, weird Protestant-vs-Catholic angles, and even actual CPU internals explanations! They don't write them like this anymore. :)

This is, of course, a bad summary from the NYT. From the article: "our sensory systems gather data at ∼1⁢ billion bits/s". But it all gets distilled down, and our attention, deliberation, and behavior control mechanisms operate in a slower and more serial fashion:

Now that's a fun framing. :) And if writing is hostile, then game design is frankly despotic. Because games aren't satisfied to merely impose visions, they also impose agency - give the players new ways of being, meanwhile also ablating their ability to do anything outside of the design.

Computer scientists believe that soon every home will be able to have their own artificial intelligence machine on their own desktops (Source.)
A book that reads in block sans serif font, "ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE PROJECTS FOR THE COMMODORE 64." The text is red, switching to gold for the words 'Commodore 64'. Cover bottom, a Commodore 64 - a light brown all-in-one microcomputer with dark brown keys - appears. In the center, a gold PCB in the shape of a human head radiates gold wires in the way wires might radiate from a chip, creating the silhouette of a head; in the center and neck of the head-shaped PCB, chips appear.
