The money pit restaurant I would open as a billionaire would be the opposite of farm to table. What are the most unnatural flavors possible? Hiring top food scientists, giving a blank check and telling them to really explore the dark corners of the flavor latent space. I want to taste eternity.

ah, they never responded to me... while it is possible that they were busy , or that they also struggle with executive dysfunction & keeping up with correspondence, I think I'll play it safe & assume they hate me & want nothing to do with me. I should respect that & never reach out to them again

Substantial portions of conventional charity and philanthropy are extremely adverse to any kind of effort to impose rigor or ask in any way “is this working at all”. It’s not a strawman that they’re critiquing, at least in my personal experience.

Very Greek tragedy thing about LLMs is that they simulataneously provide clear evidence that writing is extremely important to cognition while they also cause people to stop doing it.

I don’t think this is accurate. At least, I can’t find any evidence for it. Singer remains friendly with PETA and has publicly praised Newkirk’s tactics. EA is better aligned with his philosophy, but when has he ever ”gone against” PETA or characterized elements of it as performative or nihilistic?

If your objection is just that it’s a description of structure not state, I’d still worry that some of the numerous simulations based on that structure might approach a plausible state

Sure, there is a clear distinction between wind and a description of wind, no matter how detailed. We don’t know, however, that such a clear map/territory distinction exists for mental states. It’s reassuring then to point to specific differences that locate the connectome firmly in the map category

’highly processed’ is probably a better comparison, insofar as it does gesture at a real category of problem but has grown into a poorly defined, largely aesthetic label for things deemed unnatural or impure, regardless of quality

It’s certainly a defensible view, but I think its impracticality while being hacked is the point. I think we will see many more such situations where it is necessary, or simply convenient, to discuss these systems in intentional terms.

In addition to being a different group deploying a different model with different outcomes, AISI was also significantly more negligent. In the OAI case, the agent had to exploit zero days to escape the sandbox and make several lateral moves to reach HF. AISI just gave agents internet access.
