Sure, millennials may be accumulating wealth at a similar rate to previous generations, but have you considered that they now need to pay for private school lest their children encounter immigrants or children of divorce?
[…] in the data on schooling, homeownership, and family formation.

All of this is hidden from the top-line metrics, usually in one of two ways:

1. Huge increases in the cost of essential aspects of family life (homeownership, education, etc.) being offset by huge decreases in the cost of non-essential goods (televisions, phones, etc.) making the young appear wealthy in the abstract but without them actually being able to afford anything meaningful;

2. By presenting false equivalencies which imply a level of choice that younger generations do not actually have. For example: an American family in 1975 could send their children to public school on the assumption that the vast majority of other children would belong to intact families, communities like their own, and would speak English as a first language. Now, realistically, many parents must turn to private schooling for the same reassurances.

Environmental footprints of dairy and plant-based milks, from Our World in Data, based on Poore and Nemecek (2018). Four bar charts compare impacts per liter of milk across the supply chain.

Land use (m² per liter): dairy milk 8.95, oat 0.76, soy 0.66, almond 0.5, rice 0.34. Dairy dwarfs every plant alternative by more than tenfold.

Greenhouse gas emissions (kg per liter): dairy milk 3.15, rice 1.18, soy 0.98, oat 0.9, almond 0.7.

Freshwater use (liters per liter): dairy milk 628.2, almond 371.46, rice 269.81, oat 48.24, soy 27.8. Here almond and rice stand out among the plant milks as notably thirsty.

Eutrophication (g per liter): dairy milk 10.65, rice 4.69, oat 1.62, almond 1.5, soy 1.06.

Across all four metrics dairy milk has the largest footprint, while no single plant milk wins on everything: oat and soy tend to rank best, almond is water-hungry, and rice is comparatively high on emissions and eutrophication.

Apology form meme addressed “To: JEAN BAUDRILLARD,” “Reason for behavior:”: “I mistook postmodernism for just saying ‘nothing is real’” / “I thought The Matrix was an accurate representation of his work” / “The media convinced me reality was still real” / “I assumed financial markets were based on real value” / “I believed capitalism could still produce authentic experiences” / “Mercury was in retrograde.” Bottom text: “I will hereby respect BAUDRILLARD and I will NOT talk down on the future first-ballot Hall of Famer.”

Incredible
Malcom Gladwell:

Think about this for a second. Imagine you're there, walking behind the wagon where they've just tossed this young man. You're watching his eyes roll back in his head-it's a haunting, visceral sight, like something out of a nightmare. And every time the wagon hits a bump, you hear it: the sound of blood gurgling up from lungs that have been absolutely devastated by gas. It's grotesque. It's as bitter and as senseless as any disease we know.

Now, here's the kicker. If you actually saw that-if you stood there and witnessed the sheer, physical reality of it—you wouldn't be so quick to go back home and tell kids who are desperate for a bit of glory that old, familiar story. You know the one. We've been telling it for generations: "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori." It's a beautiful sentiment, right? That it's sweet and fitting to die for your country. But when you look at the data on the ground, when you see the reality of the trenches, you realize that it's not just a story. It's a lie.
