Ivan Turgenev's "Execution of Troppmann" is a short essay, published in 1870, that gives a first-hand account of the writer attending a public execution in Paris. Turgenev's details how the drunk, unruly crowd turned a somber moment into a carnival. A deeply moving essay; I encourage you to read it.

A time-aged photo of a bowling team posing behind a display of bowling balls and pins. From left to right, we've got a long-haired white guy making a 'hell yeah!' face and probably hearing REO Speedwagon in his head. Then there's a pretty girl with straight long hair in a pink shirt very consciously doing a posing for a photo face. Then a black guy in a blue polo to prove everyone here is cool, next to the oldest dude on the team with longer hair and a 'stache in a peach-colored bowling shirt. Then a girl with a cute bob and sunglasses in a floral shirt, and finally there's Ed who there isn't a lot to say about. Below the ball display is a wooden sign with tracks for placing movable plastic letters. In the top left it reads 'REDONDO BCH.' and top right is '1975' and between those is the mysterious phrase 'MAYBE IT WILL HAPPEN TODAY'.

Meanwhile, the Trump family is disrupting the corruption industry, in ways that make Guilfoyle’s request for cash payments seem pitifully outdated. Let’s take just a sample of recent stories. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/stop-paper...
Trump invited another round of bribes in the form of worthless meme coin purchases. The biggest buyers will have the honor of dining with the President. Trump is estimated to have made $1 billion in crypto gains, while his investors have lost $4.7 billion. Other family members also benefit. The President’s 20-year-old son, still attending college, is estimated to have gained $150 million from the family crypto ventures.

Defense companies with ties to Don Jr. and Eric Trump have netted $6 billion in Pentagon contracts. What are the odds that two guys with no defense background would have such an unerring sense of where the Pentagon would want to invest its resources?

Trump’s son-in-law, and golfing buddy, are brokering Middle East peace and an end to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, while also negotiating business deals in the regions. For example, part of a potential peace deal for Ukraine is a multibillion-dollar oil deal that benefits Middle East executives with ties to Kushner and Witkoff.

As if that weren't enough, in his popular 1695 travel guide to Italy, François Misson inflated these numbers! He wrote that Terracina actually sent Monte Cassino 20,000 eels per year, to give thanks for St. Benedict's intercession to break a Turkish siege. Man...that dude ruled. 2/2
Meme. Painting of St. Benedict, looking rather stern and carrying what appears to be a crozier. He is bald, with a long white beard and no real eyebrows. He has the hint of a halo around his head, which he might have enjoyed. Benedict's nose is sharp and absolute, and his face is somewhat sunken and lined. His eyes are drawn to your left shoulder, and his expression is serious but slightly curious, as if there were something odd on your shoulder. Nothing dangerous, mind you. Just...weird. Like toothpaste, or a large beetle with a top hat.

Benny's right hand is raised, with his first two fingers extended to make a blessing sign. Or to tell the waiter that he wants two orders of guacamole. Who can really tell with Benedict?

If nothing else, he at least looks like a man who speaks well, so he's living up to his name.

Meme text reads:
"The Rule of St. Benedict:
I stop the siege, I get the eels"

It's Thusday. Let's go to Italy for our eel history! In the 10th C the monastery at Monte Cassino -- home of St. Benedict! -- got a rent of 6,000 eels per year from the town of Terracina, & another 600 eels from other rents. 'Cause the house (of St. Benedict) always wins. 1/2 🗃️🧪
Meme. Photograph of a man sitting at a card table. His head is in his hands, on the table, presumably in despair. You can only see the top of his head; his nose is buried in the green felt of the table. There are several sets of cards in front of him, and a small pile of chips. The man is wearing a white dress shirt and what looks like a black vest. He does not seem to be wearing a watch, is is always a terrible mistake in a casino.

The man's fingers are spread across his head, and you can be sure that he has betided some woe. It also looks a bit like he's pulling his head off and putting it into the pot. All in means *all* in.

The man's hair is short, and you can see the edges of his ears. They seem like very fine ears, and not the ears of a looser. He should take heart in this; if nothing else -- like Prince Humperdinck -- he will be able to walk away with his ears intact.

Meme text reads:
"TFW you didn't
Bring enough eels
to the casino.
