It’s also just so dumb (in addition to insensitive) to relate TLH to real sexual assault in academic institutions because I *guarantee* the rapists and the rape apologists are not and would not touch that kind of rom-com with a 10 foot pole; it is not any sort of factor in rape culture

the thing that normalizes abusive dynamics in academia is the failure on the part of colleges to take action against abusers (ask me how I know), not rom-com writers who, if anything, may create narratives that are healing to survivors

I'm thinking about this partly because of the Cornell news but also partly because of The Love Hypothesis, which is being pitched as a cute romance but is personally horrifying to read / watch as a woman in STEM. (I know the author is also a woman in STEM and honestly I don't get that at all.)

Its this but also there has been a genuine conspiracy to convince the public at large that covid has gone away or is only a cold now. And people will buy that because its what they want to believe. (Plus its kind of ableist to not care about spreading colds and other viruses too)

I swear it’s because deep down they know it’s contagious, they know it could happen to them AND they know there’s things they could to do reduce their odds… but they don’t want to. We remind them what they’re risking and that they had the tools to prevent it & chose to roll the dice.

95% of college-age men admitted to using coercive tactics to get women they already knew did not want any to have sex with them to have sex. When men say they don’t know who these creeps are, all it tells me is that either they’re lying or they’ve chosen not to learn about rape culture.
