the reality is such stories are written and consumed in response/conversation with the patriarchy as a safe fantastical world to rest in. Criticism should be treated with care. Yet its always treated as ground zero for "normalizing" or "harming" women as if those such things did not exist already

I normally post someone else's poem but I've been thinking a lot about trauma and recovery today and so here's one of my old ones on exactly that theme - holding together/falling apart/what remains
maybe you lose nothing and become everything

maybe all the homes that were are still your home

maybe moving on is moving back around

maybe you can hold what is and always was

maybe all lost things are found together

maybe all lost things wanted to be lost

they found their way among the discarded

maybe you lost all that’s to your name

I dream there’s no destruction only change

I have lived a little time and all that is

seems so much to carry, what if I cannot hold

shedding selves like skins to pass through doors?

can I be everything and lose nothing? clasp

fist around those moments pinned to glass.

I try to capture all but sand runs fast --

I’ve always loved what is already ruin

For me, once a woman in STEM, that post about The Love Hypothesis is so funny because: Wanting to read or write power asymmetry in a romance about fictional characters= actually not problematic. Wanting to control what women read or write = actually problematic.

the screenshot is fascinating from a literary / cultural studies perspective because this is a re-creation of anti-reylo dialogue ~2016-2018 only in the context the dynamic rendered through for fan-fiction eventually spun into an original story

Not going to engage directly with this post bcos I actually hate drama but...being generous here, the worry is that TLH normalizes abusive dynamics in academic settings. As someone who has experienced that very thing, fiction is not the same as reality...
Skeets by Katie Mack: Thinking a lot lately about the men I know who are willfully ignorant about power dynamics and how I don’t *know* they’ve done anything specifically worse than be willfully ignorant about power dynamics but also if I had to guess which of my acquaintances had, I’d guess them first.

I'm thinking about this partly because of the Cornell news but also partly because of The Love Hypothesis, which is being pitched as a cute romance but is personally horrifying to read / watch as a woman in STEM. (I know the author is also a woman in STEM and honestly I don't get that at all.)

i should clarify, when i write people doing bad things, it's because i am bad. they are me. more importantly, when you read about those bad things, they also become you. that's how story works. in fact, you are going to think about murder before this skeet ends. how's that feel, sicko.

What I want

Your open legs a tree where I leave messages
Like a failed monk with new prayers
Waiting it out in the small clearing
To stay in the wilderness without trembling
To lean into a covenant of branches
No one can redeem the part of lying awake
Near your offered wrist yet I might split you
With my tongue could separate lip from lip
Put a mouth down hard or a hand
Where you refuse to open this province
Of holy damage where we learn to address
From the edge of a tired forest the wonder

Of what I want being what I want
Until you turn over breathless with news

at one and the same moment, both. Because
I live in both. Can you imagine,

Medical History by Nicole Sealey
I’ve been pregnant. I’ve had sex with a man who’s had sex with men. I can’t sleep. My mother has, my mother’s mother had, asthma. My father had a stroke. My father’s mother has high blood pressure. Both grandfathers died from diabetes. I drink. I don’t smoke. Xanax for flying. Propranolol for anxiety. My eyes are bad. I’m spooked by wind. Cousin Lilly died from an aneurysm. Aunt Hilda, a heart attack. Uncle Ken, wise as he was, was hit by a car as if to disprove whatever theory toward which I write. And, I understand, the stars in the sky are already dead.

Working on a Paper Tiger au // 1980s NYC // crooked cop Gary Pearl x Times Square stripper Rey
A screenshot from the poster for Paper Tiger, an illustration of Adam Driver’s half profile, his hair dissolving like smoke A woman wearing red stocking and suspenders lies on a bed in a green-tinged room, with a beaded lamp behind her. We only see her legs and one thigh In the dim crimson haze of the club floor, the man comes into focus. It only takes Rey a split-second to assess him, to check — as she always does— for danger. Even sitting, beer in his hand, he's a head taller than the others, with long, dark that curls at the back of his neck. Her trained eyes find the thick gold watch on his wrist that smacks of a heavy wallet. Pinky rings glint from each of his two little fingers and that tells her he's a man who likes the sound of his own voice, who'd prefer her to play dumb. Immediately, she puts on her best saccharine smile. But then he looks from the table and meets her eye and it stops Rey in her tracks. She is used to being looked at by desperate men, each part of her separated out and on display, like meat under a butcher's cleaver. She's used to being sold for parts, like the gold jewelery the old women hawk at the faded pawn brokers along Eight Avenue. What she's not used to is a look like this cop is giving her, one that seems to take all of her in at once, like a gaping jaw ready to swallow her whole.

This man is not just a lamb to be fattened up and taken for all he's worth. This man is a wolf.

One of my favorite poems. By Muriel Rukeyser
I lived in the first century of world wars.
Most mornings I would be more or less insane,
The newspapers would arrive with their careless stories,
The news would pour out of various devices
Interrupted by attempts to sell products to the unseen.
I would call my friends on other devices;
They would be more or less mad for similar reasons.
Slowly I would get to pen and paper,
Make my poems for others unseen and unborn.
In the day I would be reminded of those men and women,
Brave, setting up signals across vast distances,
Considering a nameless way of living, of almost unimagined values.
As the lights darkened, as the lights of night brightened,
We would try to imagine them, try to find each other,
To construct peace, to make love, to reconcile
Waking with sleeping, ourselves with each other,
Ourselves with ourselves. We would try by any means
To reach the limits of ourselves, to reach beyond ourselves,
To let go the means, to wake.

I lived in the first century of these wars.

Look at you, sitting there being good.
After two years you're still dying for a cigarette.
And not drinking on weekdays, who thought that one up?
Don't you want to run to the corner right now
for a fifth of vodka and have it with cranberry juice
and a nice lemon slice, wouldn't the backyard
that you're so sick of staring out into
look better then, the tidy yard your landlord tends
day and night — the fence with its fresh coat of paint,
the ash-free barbeque, the patio swept clean of small twigs—
don't you want to mess it all up, to roll around
like a dog in his flowerbeds? Aren't you a dog anyway,
always groveling for love and begging to be petted?
You ought to get into the garbage and lick the insides
of the can, the greasy wrappers, the picked-over bones,
you ought to drive your snout into the coffee grounds.
Ah, coffee! Why not gulp some down with four cigarettes
and then blast naked into the streets, and leap on the first
beautiful man you find? The words ruin me, haven't they
been jailed in your throat for forty years, isn't it time
you set them loose in slutty dresses and torn fishnets
to totter around in five-inch heels and slutty mascara?
Sure it's time. You've rolled over long enough.
Forty, forty-one. At the end of all this
there's one lousy biscuit, and it tastes like dirt.
So get going. Listen: they're howling for you now:
up and down the block your neighbors' dogs
burst into frenzied barking and won't shut up

The thing with the love hypothesis and id imagine most of the au reylo-fanfics-turned novels is that unlike a Fifty Shades, where entire plot outline have direct 1:1 equivalents, it mostly is just an ordinary romcom with a ship dynamic of “grouchy guy, nice woman.”

The top of hell by Natalie Shapiro

It’s weird that Hades, when he dropped,
Dropped only to the top of Hell. That he didn’t
Plunge all the way down. And that the first thing
He found in Hell was the sublime face
Of atlas, who, with the world on his shoulder,
Had nowhere else to stand. That’s what it’s like
To wake up and see your face each
Morning. I could be falling so much farther.
You have no idea how much farther I could fall.

the start of a little microfic/vibes-only oneshot based on this delightful art! I’ve been sitting on this for a while but finally unlocked the likely endpoint—coming soon to an archive near you? #reyloww (thank you to @naanei.bsky.social & @pascalities.bsky.social for the inspo & permission! 💕🦋)
Men, Rey decided, were more trouble than they were worth.

Except—

No. There was no except. Ben was loud—heavy footfalls on the old floors of her cottage, the deep rumble of his voice carrying too far through the forest and startling deer. He was large—too tall and broad to wear any of her clothes, so she had to sacrifice a sheet to fashion a sort of toga for him. He stared—at each ingredient she put in her cauldron, at the nest of baby chickadees outside the kitchen window, at her familiar, at her.

But she couldn’t let him die alone and cold and injured in the woods, any more than she’d abandon a wounded sparrow.

Ben needed a lot more food than a sparrow, though. And attention—if she was out foraging all afternoon, he complained that he hadn’t know when to expect her back. If she was working a delicate spell, he interrupted with questions. Rey bit her tongue at the rudeness of a city boy unaccustomed to old magic.

No, not a boy. A man. A large, intense, needy, irritating man.

Traipsing around half-naked, once he could walk again with the crutch she’d made for him by coaxing an obliging tree branch into the proper shape. Complaining about being half-naked despite the early summer weather, as if it was her fault that he was so—so big, as if it wasn’t more of an imposition to her to have so much of his bare skin on display all the time. All those scattered scars and beauty marks like a fortune she refused to read. Broad shoulders, thighs thick and strong despite the fortnight he’d spent abed.

In her bed, while she slept on a pallet before the hearth, because Rey wasn’t about to put him there and trip over him every time she needed to stir up the coals or put the kettle on.

She was getting awfully tired of that pallet. There was soot on her hair because her braid kept flopping out of the blankets onto the hearthstones. At least it wasn’t singed, she thought sourly. That would be one indignity too many.
