Minor pedagogical win of the day is that at the last possible moment I had the brainwave to add an extra-credit question to today's botany class review quiz: which angiosperm family co-starred in the Super Bowl halftime show?

Revealed: How Substack makes money from hosting Nazi newsletters
Exclusive: Site takes a cut of subscriptions to content that promotes far-right ideology, white supremacy and antisemitism The global publishing platform Substack is generating revenue from newsletters that promote virulent Nazi ideology, white supremacy and antisemitism, a Guardian investigation has found. The platform, which says it has about 50 million users worldwide, allows members of the public to self-publish articles and charge for premium content. Substack takes about 10% of the revenue the newsletters make. About 5 million people pay for access to newsletters on its platform. Continue reading...

The public made noise for Liam Ramos and it got him released from Dilley. Now we must make noise for 7 year old Diana Crespo. Her parents were taking her for emergency medical care when ICE grabbed them, and she’s rotting in the camp sick and exposed to measles. Get them out!

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the pathology lab differs from research-based PCR in fundamental ways. Quality and clinical expertise are two key factors.

If you are submitting an NIH grant in February, you will be required to use SciENcv to prepare you biosketch. IT IS MUCH WORSE THAN YOU CAN POSSIBLY IMAGINE. Set aside *at least* 4 hours just to transfer an existing an biosketch into SciENcv.

I find it similar to MOOCs, which I also tried out with high hopes. Data is different from information which is different from knowledge which is different from wisdom. Technologies help individuals with data and information. Community is needed for context that enable knowledge and wisdom.

I tried something similar using ChatGPT 4.o. "I'm trying to put together a portfolio of three to five papers to highlight my breadth and depth as a research scientist. (I'm Carl Bergstrom.) Could you help me choose papers?" Here's the result.
I'm trying to put together a portfolio of three to five papers to highlight my breadth and depth as a research scientist. (I'm Carl Bergstrom.)

Could you help me choose papers?
ChatGPT said:

Absolutely, Carl. Given your broad body of work across evolutionary biology, information theory, network science, metascience, and science communication, a strong portfolio should showcase both disciplinary depth and interdisciplinary reach. A good starting structure might be:

Foundational work in evolutionary biology or theoretical ecology

Papers at the intersection of information theory and biology

Work in network theory or epidemiological modeling

    Metascience or science reform scholarship

Public-facing or high-impact commentary on misinformation or science communication

Here’s a possible set of five papers that reflect this breadth and depth:IMPORTANT PAPER BUT DATE IS OFF BY A DECADE

1. "The transmission sense of information" (2002, Biology and Philosophy)

Why: A conceptual cornerstone in your work on biological information.

Highlights: Philosophical rigor, interdisciplinary relevance, and enduring influence on how scientists think about information in biological systems.

I'VE NEVER WRITTEN ON THIS SUBJECT OR WITH THESE AUTHORS

2. "Evolutionary dynamics of viral marketing" (2008, PNAS, with K. Lerman and R. Hogg)

Why: Demonstrates your application of mathematical models to real-world social phenomena.

Highlights: Network theory, diffusion dynamics, interdisciplinary breadth (social + biological analogies).

I NEVER WROTE THIS OR ANYTHING LIKE IT
3. "The fundamental limitations of contact tracing for COVID-19" (2020, eLife)

Why: A timely, policy-relevant paper that exemplifies your scientific leadership during the pandemic.

Highlights: Mathematical epidemiology, real-world application, and high visibility.I NEVER WROTE ABOUT THIS AND NEVER PUBLISHED IN THIS JOURNAL

4. "Systematic inequality and hierarchy in faculty hiring networks" (2015, Science Advances)

Why: Important contribution to the empirical study of academic hierarchies.

Highlights: Data-driven metascience, strong methodology, and influence on debates about academic equity.

5. "Misinformation in and about science" (2021, PNAS)

Why: Captures your role in science communication and misinformation research.

Highlights: Interdisciplinary scope, impact on public discourse, and relevance in the post-truth era.

There is a lot of discussion going on right now from Jews about left wing antisemitism. One of my frustrations is that it feels like any time this gets brought up, we get dismissed. There is left wing antisemitism, it is harmful, & it should be a larger discussion.
