I made it 91% of the way through War and Peace but I'm finally tapping out; I can put up with Tolstoy getting distracted & repeating himself verbatim all the time (and even his tendency to dedicate entire chapters to arbitrary BS historical analysis), but this Epilogue...man...it's SO BAD! I can't!

@timnitgebru.blacksky.app is certainly correct. AI doomerism is interlinked with the present fascism. 20th century facism emerged from perception liberalism had failed. 21st century facism is rooted in nihilistic belief liberalism must fail + essentialism (biological, cultural, genetic/eugenics)

the only threats "AI" poses to society are when people put it in charge of things that require thought, or crash the economy over it, or destroy the environment to power it. but it's people doing all of those things. AI poses zero threat by itself as it cannot do anything due to not existing

This exactly describes why I feel so immediately exhausted after reading or looking at something AI generated. You can’t extrapolate the thinking from something which has none. I think it’s why it’s easier to start from scratch than to fix an AI generated thing.

If the police & security services didn't see this coming, it was a massive intelligence failure. If they did, but still gave the impression of being caught on the hop, it's something worse.

Why this El Niño is different from all the others
The dark, red tongue spreading in the Pacific is growing at a rate not seen in living memory. The uncertainty over what is driving it has alarmed experts.

Across the US, workers are souring on AI. The tech industry has insisted that AI would make workers’ lives easier and more productive, that the more people understood and used AI, the more they would like it. Something closer to the opposite has happened.

Why office workers are turning against AI
Whether or not you like AI at work ultimately boils down to a question of power.

Starmer's out - @zackpolanski.bsky.social: you'd better throw the kitchen sink at this byelection; this election is what folks will point-to when they decide whether the @greenparty.org.uk are a viable alternative or a wasted vote! You got dis, but YOU GOTTA FIGHT TO GET DIS.

Luckily, I felt like Starmer trained me to handle disillusion in Labour, so when Burnham came along I could already feel the "new boss, same as the old boss" vibe. As far as electoral politics go, for me, it's the @greenparty.org.uk or bust — not sure anyone else can be trusted!

Pepper update! Bigger, leafier, and FILLED with peppers — some are even starting to turn red! I reckon I'll be eating some of them before too long! 🫑 🤤
A large pepper plant showing three peppers that are starting to turn from green to red. Two pepper plants in the sun; huge and leafy! My hand reaching into a pepper plant's leafy depths to present one particularly large specimen that is halfway between green and orange.

Techbros seem to love Tolkien, so here's an analogy to help you understand what genAI is. GenAI is The One Ring. You think your use is justified, b/c you don't have evil in your heart. But it came from evil, it is intended for evil purpose, & anything you do with it will be twisted to that end.
Boromir from THE LORD OF THE RINGS, holding The One Ring. He thought he could use it for good, but everything done with the ring turns to evil. He was one of the mightiest warriors of middle earth, and he could not resist its powers. Others even mightier fell to the ring. Do you think you are stronger than them? The One Ring is generative AI.

I cannot stress enough: the AI bubble has already popped it is just being kept on life support by corporations trying to squeeze even a dollar more out of their shit investment, and tech bros doing the same before abandoning their shit company startups. keep hating on AI, you're winning

"I think it’s more powerful to assert that we don’t use AI because it has no useful place in our process [...] Using AI would be a bad idea because it would make our work worse — we’re not just resisting it for moral reasons." 💯

Some person quoted me saying gray morality leads to fascism bc right and wrong are blurred and ppl get sympathetic for the bad guys???? Gray morality in fiction encourages critical thinking. Believing everything is either Good or Evil is how you get ppl enforcing censorship and thought crimes shit.

Update on the pepper plants: THEY'RE GROWING PEPPERS! I don't know why I'm surprised, but I'm feeling an odd sense of pride in becoming a pepper-poppa 🫑
Tucked within a dense green foliage hangs half a dozen baby green peppers, growing out from within the petals of pale white flowers that they're now shedding.

One pepper, in particular, is being held up for display by my hand.
